Ribbon???

Man, Nady is trying to make everything, arent they?? Whats is the list on it?
I think they are trying to put Behringer under. The amount of products they have now is amazing. I have wanted to buy the co-1 or whatever it is for a while now, since I have a collection of cheapos. Some of them are very good!

What I'm wondering is who actually makes the thing. I've never actually heard of a Chinese made ribbon...

I did some searching on this. I only found one mention of price and it was in foreign currency. If I converted the correct currency it looks like a $883.00 list. So I figure about half of that would be the street price. Of course I could be way off here.

Okay I got the price from my buddy who reps Nady. Its a $400.00 list, and a $300.00 street price. I may get one to evaluate, from him.

Ive found Nady stuff to be much more unreliable than Behringer, which means pretty bad. But they do actually put out some pretty good products. Nady TCM1500 is great on strings.

I would be interested on trying out this mic too. If anyone gets one i could try an A/B Comparison with my Royer 122 just to see how it compares to the ribbon sound. Maybe down the road i will pick one up myself. I like the look of it.

my guess is that it is gonna have a perfectly decent transducer in a really good case hooked up to a totally shitty transformer.

there really isnt much to a ribbon mic, and there is no reason why you couldnt get a factory in china to make one for next to nothing, but there is no getting around the expensive transformer. there is no way they threw a $50 jensen xformer in there.

I would love it if one of the better-quality-contol cheam mic makers (Studio Projects, MXL, etc) put together an inexpensive high value ribbon mic.

it probably would be decently easy to mod the mic if you were willing to have a nice transformer duct taped to the base of the mic. otherwise, you might have trouble fitting it in the case.. dont know cause i havent seen one yet.

however, i'll probably get one... very interested i am.

I just bought a matched pair of c4's on tuesday at Full Compass, and opened the box and had a question about them so i called studio projects. The guy who took my call was real friendly and when he answered my main questions, I asked him if they ever thought about putting out a ribbon mic. He said that it had been discussed, but it was far on down the line of the things they were in the process of working on/completeing. I'm sure if Nady has some success with theirs, then others will follow. Lets all hope that the Nady is halfway decent or better and does well so others will be inspired to make them also. I'm actually excited to read some actual reviews of the puppy!

The transformer you want to use is the Lundahl LL2911. You can get if from Kevin Carter at K&K Audio for around $60. Only catch is that you may have to be creative about mounting it, like George said. Kevin may be able to help you with that, too. He’s a great guy!

Here is his current link : http://www.kevinc927.addr.com./transformers.html , but in a few days it’s changing to this: www.kandkaudio.com.

well i checked at work today, and we're (MF) only getting 9 in on the 16th. (however they wont be available for a little bit to everyone else). 300 bucks is about right on the dot of what were going to be selling them for. i can tell you right now, as soon as they hit the shelves in our warehouse, i am going to grab on and do a quick test on one of them.
so sometime after that we should hopefully know how nice they are

Not much update--I saw its innard pics. Built quality is very sloppy. Ribbon corrugated unevenly, with pitch to big for 2um foil--might have problems in long term stability. There is a bass compensating mesh, which located in front of the ribbon on rear side, which tells me both sides sound differently. From the pic it seems it uses 1/8"x1/8"x 2" Neodymium magnets with O-shaped magnetic return circuit. My speculation, but looking at all this, I bet whatever you want, the trafo is not Lundahl.

Hey Alan, how 'bout it? I would definitely be interested in a good-quality, cheapish ribbon mic. I don't exactly trust the folks at Nady to deliver it (I had a Nady mixer that actually burst into flames during a live session  ). I understand if you can't comment on it for some reason, but it would be cool to hear about it if you guys were considering it. Sames goes for MXL if anyone knows.
