Here's the installation.
Win 2k
Pentium 500 Mhz
512 Ram
IDE drive for system and programs
SCSI drive to record wav files.
Matrox g400 dual head video (using Dual Head features)
Networked
Gadgetlabs 8/24 sound card

Here's my problem
Just had to format hard drive and reinstall operating sys.
Updated video drivers.
Loaded and installed latest build of n-tracks (registered). Now N-tracks hangs up soon after opening any menu. if I try to change preferences it hangs immediately. Even in Safe Mode it hangs right away. Also can't kill the hung app with task manager. Says that it is debugging.

Anybody else have similar experience and a solution.

Thanks for the help. Have used N-tracks for a couple of years without a major problems - until this latest.

um...i dunno man...you could try downloading the application again. Maybe you have a corrupted installation file somewhere. It might allow you to install but has troubles running.

I'm running Win2K (with SP3) with no problem.

Have you tried it with any other audio application???? Go to hitsquad.com and download demo apps to test. (Be sure to find other types of high-performance apps to test; maybe you have bad RAM?)

Yes, it's possible to get a bad download of the installer; be sure to get another copy of the N installer, too.

Not sure the chipset of your mainboard.. If it isn't intel, check for mainboard drivers ( like 4 in 1 is needed for VIA, as an example)

Sounds like an irq problem... which leads me to:

Did you use ACPI mode or "standard pc" when installing W2K?
would be an option if you did a custom install, typical will always use ACPI, I believe..

Check device manager, properties on "computer"

Sounds cards need there own irq, and acpi tries to share them with other hardware.. You may need to set it to standard pc to get it to work right.. I did. I was able to change it on the fly, without reloading, but it's risky.. make sure to backup data first..
Worked great after I did that..

Good luck

The chipset is not the issue becuase he reformated his current computer. he didn't get a new computer. And the drive issue would not change the ability to open the preferences menu. IT would change the ability to record though

Good point, but mine opens the sound drivers when opening the preferences screen, would hang before I made those changes.. Not sure exactly what happens when you open that menu, but I know mine hung there.

Reinstalling the os would need mainboard drivers reloaded if his board needs them.. Specially if VIA chipset..

Understand your points - they are good ones.. Im just trying to help..

Probably way off base...

Thanks for the brainstorming. After working on the problems for a while I feel like you hit a wall..... no fresh ideas on what to do next. So I appreciate all these suggestions.
I'll give them a shot and let you know how it turns out.

It was IRQ managment.

Had to set PnP OS to no in the bios and change PC settings to Standard PC in device manager. I thought my original installation of win2k defaulted to that.... But that was about 100 builds ago.

So the good news: I'm up and running again.
The bad news; I almost had the family convinced I needed a new mainboard and chip.....

Thanks for the help.
