I use n-Track as my recording software. I had been using the built-in audio supplied with my motherboard. A few weeks ago I upgraded to the M-Audio Audiophile 2496. It installed successfully. I have a small mixer that I use for mic inputs before hitting the Audiophile. I only use the Audiophile for recording. Playback goes through my built-in audio and out to my 400w Altec speakers.

The problem I have is that I can't get input to n-Track from the Audiophile. In the M-Audio Delta Control Panel I can see that my mics are picking up sound. In the Windows 2000 Sounds and Multimedia control panel I have set my preferred recording device to M-Audio Delta AP 1/2. In n-Track I have gone to the Settings->Preferences tab, selected Audio devices and selected WDM: M-Audio Delta AP 1/2 as an audio recording device. However, if I choose View->Sound Card's mixer->Recording controls, I get a message that there is a problem with my hardware, and I cannot hear or see (on the n-Track meters) evidence that sound is getting to n-Track.

What have I done wrong?

(I forgot to mention I use n-Track version 3.2.3)

hey

last week I bought an audiophile usb. same problem with the software mixer too... and some more. so I brought it back to the shop. In my opinion the audiophile is a big no-no... at least in combination with windows.

problems I had:
- drivers were not windows-certified (newest drivers datet 2003!!!!)
- had to install it twice to get more than a distorted playback on only the right channel.
- no softwaremixer could not be shown because of the faulty drivers
and now the best thing:
- no monitoring of what you're recording.

piece of crap, really.

and oh, I forgot: since it was usb, everytime you turned it off and on again, the drivers were installed again, including the error messages about the certification.

Sounds like you should have went with the firewire, I have a couple of 24/96 and they run flawless together.....Looks like you didnt do much reseach about USB before making your purchase. mind you that I can only comment on the hardware not the software, also what are the specs of your machine?

first of all, I don't have firewire and I wanted a card that I can hook up to my laptop too.

my desktop pc is 2500XP, 512mb ram, win xp sp2, usb 2.

I did some research before buying. The only downside I found then was the fact that you can't record at 24/96 while monitoring - which is absolutely strange. but as I mentioned: Mine couldn't even monitor at 16/44.1.

but I don't care anymore. brought it back and got the bucks back.

Eazy there Skippy! you dont have to get upset about my comment, Are you saying that the pc doesent have firewire or the laptop? firewire interfaces for pc's are fairly cheap, it seems that your desktop is a decient machine I dont understand why you had problems. ;) So what kind of interface did you go with?

I have used my Audiophile 2496 PCI succesfully with n-track since I've had the card. To answer the original question... when you go to view-->Soundcard's mixer you will always get that message because It is trying to invoke the Windows Sound Mixer which does not work with the Audiophile Card. To access the Delta Audiophile Mixer you should just double-click the "M-Audio Delta Control Panel" Icon in your system tray, or just go to Windows Control Panel and find the "M-Audio Delta Audio" Icon. If neither of these Icons is present you must reinstall your drivers.

Also, you said you are using your built-in sound card for playback. This might cause a problem because most built-in soundcards do not support 24 bit audio.

SonnyLarsen,
Flavio at n-Track tried to assure me that n-Track works with different input and output hardware. I think you are right, though. n-Track appears to have a problem when the bit-rate is not the same for the input as the output. Flavio wrote that it should not matter. Perhaps version 4 needs another tweak. Anyway, I decided to go WDM: AP 1/2 for both in and out. This forced me to connect my Altec speaker system to the outputs of the Audiophile 2496. Unfortunately, the Audiophile does not provide connection pins for my CD player.
