mysterious speaker reconing

what's with it? why is it so secretive? anyone here ever reconed a speaker? was it really so difficult?
 
I have never reconed a speaker. I did get a small 15 or 25 ? amp reconed twice though, because I was using it as a PA moniter and would blow it out. :eek:

I did Google however and found this link. I know, you could have Googled too if you wanted. :D Or I could have rewrote a few things in my own words, and pretended to know how to do it myself. ;)

you should have rewrote the words and became our new reconing expert. :D i've read the speaker talk page quite a few times. there's some good info there.

serisously though, trly to google up directions on reconing a speaker and see what you come up with. nada!

It's a delicate process. The alignment of the cone and spider are critical to get the voice coil suspended correctly centered in the gap. A good speaker reconing guy is somewhat of an artist.
 
Speaker reconing "warning don't try this at home". I have never done one, we just sent our blown ones out. I have seen it done, and not only did it look deceptively simple, I can assure you it is not. Plus, the glue, acetone etc. smell aweful. :eek: However, I have replaced many a diaphragm (sp?) in smoked horn drivers. Leave it to the pro's. Unless you can find a guy/gal who is willing to teach you.
 
this all backs up what i was saying. do you think reconing a speaker is harder than making a guitar nut? building an amplifier? a microphone? rebuilding an engine? making your own egg rolls? :D mixing your own songs?

how can such a thing be an art?
 
I would assume that it's all in the practice. With speaker reconing, as with the other things you list, the first time is really difficult and gives you dubious results. By the 500th time you do it-- should be pretty simple. I know the theory behind reconing, and have seen others do it, but have not tried to do my own.

Unless you have the cash and patience to make mistakes, or are more concerned about learning how to do it than getting a "perfect" result, I'd leave it to someone with more experience.

That does sound like a Google challenge though, and I love a challenge. Google will not win !! If I am not back in a few hours, come and get me !! :D

RECONING :D :D :D :D

This entails stripping the driver down to the original metal chassis (magnet, basket, etc.) and building the driver again, as if from scratch. Duplication of the original performance is the goal. I can also usually repaired damaged magnet structures as well. My assembly materials and workmanship are professional industrial grade, and are the result of years of manufacturing experience. You can expect a reconed driver to sound like new and give many years of satisfaction.

Speaking of reconing, I just came across a Johnson 4x12 in the local guitar shop for $199. The screws were off of the back, so I pulled it off, and lo and behold there were three Vintage 30s in there. The fourth was missing.

Come to find out, the fourth is being reconed in house. Now, I understand there are people out there who can likely recone a speaker very well. And it's not that I don't trust the local shop, but I don't want to buy a shitty reconed speaker that will mess with the sound of the rest of the V30s. Moreover, if that single one was torn up enough to need a recone, what's the deal with the rest?

Would anyone here recommend buying/not buying a reconed speaker? I figure $199 is a steal for a cab with four V30s, but if one of them was shot to begin with and is remedied with a shit recone job, what's the harm?
 
if you don't buy it, i'll buy it and you can ship it to me. :D if you can compare the recone with one or all of the old speakers, you'll know if it sounds radically different. i don't think i would have a problem buying a reconed speaker (at a lower price of course). if the others sound fine, i would'nt worry about it. of course the reconed speaker is going to need some break in time to settle down.

The guys I know who do it will talk about the process, but will never ever tell where they get the parts and materials. That's where all the mystery is.
