Mysterious Power Static Problems

Had my studio turned on. Heard intermittent static, with master levels lit up (say 2-4 of the green lights) on the mixer when it happened (every few seconds). There was nothing playing. It was coming from my guitar amp line out channel. I unplugged the line out cable from the mixer and it stopped. Now here's the weird part. I turned off the amp/unplugged the amp/unplugged my guitar processor and the static still came through. My wife turned off the stove upstairs and then it stopped. What up with that? I better remember to record when she's not cooking :p

I had a similar problem, mine was with a water heater though. Finally traced it to a corroded ground in the breaker box. A little cleaning and tightening made the problem go away. I'm no electrician so I can't say if this is the source for you, just what worked for me. Hope you find it, I know how annoying power fluctuations and small surges can be, could possibly even damage equipment if the fluctuations are very large at all.

I got a couple of line conditioners to solve that problem in my studio.

Already had the gear on UPS but still got the mystery noises, and an overall underlying static.

It's a new building, and the power is pretty consistent, but apparently there is a noise issue.

I am in Tampa, Florida, where lightening, quick growing vegetation, birds and varmints, and older power lines are a real problem.

I got 2 Monster Cable units w/ 2 and 3 stage filtering. A 2000 strip and a 3500 rack mount.

Shared my results on another forum, and they told me I wasted my money on expensive power strips.

My problem was solved by the line conditioners, not some disagreeing, self appointed know-it-all half a world away from my situation : )
