Of course there's the other side of the coin, those that aren't in the slightest bit interested in new music or chasing after new bands/artists because of music overload.
I guess you do what you can for your own reasons. They all coexist. Even within the same band you'll find very different reasons for doing the same thing.

I'm pretty convinced that no amount of self-promotion will get you anywhere. There's simply too much crap out there. You have to just get lucky, and you can get lucky without lifting a finger.

yeah Id kinda agree with you...if i was serious about this my strategy to make it wouldnt be through self promotion on websites...thats a lot of effort for little return and man...its fucking saturated...

I think you can increase that possibility of luck...but its looking at non traditional routes...and each type of music has different avenues, some much harder than others id guess

It's all about spreading the word and making a few bucks, dude. without self promotion neither is happening.

by the way, i never danced around anything (it was more of a boogie), it's all right there in my posts if you read them. We're not rich. we're making a living and doing just fine.
