thank's for the advice people, some of you thought i should list my budget before responding. i'm thinking at least $4000. canadian for the main recording gear not including mics, cables, stands, speakers etc. as for my room i won't be doing much to it to start out unless you can tell me some must do's.

i was checking out some gear yestarday the new roland 24 tr hard disk studio looks quite awsome an all in one unit. to me it looks like it will do almost everything you could do with a computer and alot easier to use. i also checked out the computer option and was quite confused. do i have to get a pricey mac, why are they better than p.c.'s do i want cubase, pro tools, sonar... do i need a mixing board or is that all done on screen. where do i plug in the mics and what else do i need to do it all at home.

how do i leave messages to certain individuals that reply to me? i didn't see any addresses or direct links or do i have to post all the time like this. take it easy i'm still fresh meat!

Do both. I've used the VS-1680, and it's got fantastic quality. Then get an audio card with digital inputs, so you can use the Mac for further manipulation if you need/want to (you've got much more flexibility in the computer). If you're a bit computer-phobic, you can stay with the Roland. If not, you can still make use of the Roland as a master recording device, so you haven't wasted money. That's what I'd do if I had the budget :)

the Roland unit wont rival a pro studio, sorry.....

for the quality you want, Id have to say that the best way to go is the ADAT route.... get an 8 bus Mackie mixer and then an ADAT for each of 8 tracks you want (2 ADAT's for 16 tracks, 3 ADAT's for 24 tracks).......way over your budget.......

$4000 Canadain is about $2546 US......

a 16 channel 8 bus mackie mixer and 2 Alesis XT20 ADATs will run you $4000 total....alot but pro quality.......thats for 16 tracks...

now within your original budget if you get one of the hard disk units, id strongly recommend one of the Yamaha AW units.....
