I need mad help with my recording + mixing, my songs sound like bird shit.
It can be heard here, http://www.myspace.com/mcnameless
The first 2 are the songs I recorded 2 days ago. It took me 4-6 hours per song. And it still sounds like crap.

My SOUNDCARD / INTERFACE

That right there is my RECORDING SOFTWARE

I have Nuendo 2 but I don't use it because everytime I record, There seems to be a delay.

HOW I SET IT UP
Anyways. An XLR goes into the CONDENSOR MICROPHONE, the other end of the XLR cable goes into the INPUT of the ART PREAMP/PHANTOM POWER.
A monster cable 1/4 inch goes into the OUTPUT of the ART PREAMP/PHANTOM POWER, the other end of the 1/4 inch goes into the AUDIGY 2 SOUNDCARD/INTERFACE

If professional engineers or master can teach me that'd be gangster. Thanks b. My e-mail is Realestninja@yahoo.com

Thank

Thanks I read it, Its kinda hieroglyfics to me but I'll keep trying to figure it out.

You're working in the land of the Pharohs now. :) You need to learn to eat breathe and sweat - let alone read - those "heiroglyphics", or you'll forever be a slave and Bear will turn your river into blood. :D

I was, of course, half-joking and half-serious. ;) The river of blood part was joking, of course (I hope? :D) But seriously, if you have trouble understanding much of Bear's article (and there's nothing wrong with that, you gotta start somewhere, right?), then you really need to do some searching and reading up on terms and concepts.

It's a real combo of art and science to keep the doo doo off the recording, and all the concepts he touches on are important on basic levels one way or another.

Only 4-6 hours? Maybe I'm just unusually slow, but you're just getting started on those tracks by my standard ;)

It takes me generally anywhere from 8-16 hours to mix a song. Mind you, I never do "cookie-cutter" mixes...

Can I send any of you pros my .ses file and can you show me what you can do to make it good quality? I would like to see.

In my experience, including setup and recording, it takes about 6-10 hours just to record a rock song... and that's moving quickly. If you are being careful and picky it should take twice that minimum.

As far as mixing, at least 5 hours if I'm flying by the seat of my pants... lots more if I want to get it right.

Sorry - but that reeally won't help you... you need to understand the underlying principles behind mixing.... just seeing parameter-settings and levels on a project won't tell you anything of value, since each mix is unique.

Why are we talking about mixing? It seems to me that the topic under discussion here first needs to be regarding mic placement and getting good tones recorded in the first place. I'm hearing some distortion on the vocals in "Three Conspiracies" for example. You might want to re-record parts of those vocals.

"Per motren time" is a pretty cool song, I like it. It seems the most together of the four linked ot on the my space site.

As far as mixing, the overall impression I get is that the balance between the parts is not right. Like in some the vocal is so loud it makes everything else seem small. The claps on 2 and 4 are also generally really loud and out of proportion to the rest of it.

The other mixing impression I get is that there is no "glue" holding everything together. It sounds like a bunch of individual parts without cohesiveness. Getting the balances more in line will help with this a lot. It will also help to put some short reverb or even light compression on the whole mix to hold it together.

One trick to getting good balances between parts is to listen to the mix at very very soft levels, like whisper soft. At low levels like that you can clearly hear when parts are too soft in relation to the others because they will be completely inaudible. So once you can hear all the parts clearly at super soft levels, then you will be a long way toward having a better balanced mix.

Hope some of this helps.

I'm about a 6-7 inches away from the mic. Hey Sonic Albert, you seem to know what you are talking about, can I send you my original .ses (adobe audition) format, and can I see how you'd mix it so I can get a better insight. If you feel you are burdened to do this, I will pay you some money, as you can see I'm all about the music, and trying to get everything together in place.

I appreciate your time in your response.

Cross-posting is not cool man - don't post the same thread in different parts of the forum. It's like a little unwritten rule here, except it gets written quite often! :)

Go back to basics. Read the article I linked you to in the other thread. Read lots and lots of articles and books and start to learn a few things for yourself. Good luck!

I'll try mixing one of your songs for free. I'm no pro like some of these guys, I just love to mix. It might take me a while to get to it though (finishing my band's album now). PM me if interested.

bird poo poo? they don't sound like shit compared to other stuff i've heard ... your vocals are a bit .. i don't know, kind of ... you know, i don't know, i just don't like the way that they sound .. it's just my taste, but there's nothing bad about your mixing c'mon
