I think he's moving. I'll have to take all this on board when I do too.

I just noticed "location pending" in his screen name info.. Like you said, he must be moving.
Previously I was thinking what a shame it would be to part ways with two lovely machines such as those.

Makes it look like a 246!

That box is HUGE!!! ;)

Yes, to set the record straight, I am moving overseas. What's frustrating is the delays .. Anyway, the boxes are gonna be loaded onto a wooden sled along with my standard house stuff. That should be fun.

I would never sell the gear that took me such a long time to gather up especially the local deals which were quite rare at that. Yup, taking all of it with me. :)

Thanks guys.

Amen

Nice work Daniel.

I'm going to ask eBay to send a mass email with a link to this thread to all eBay sellers. Any member that fails to follow the link will have their seller acount suspended until they do. :D

P.S. I'm so inspired now I wish I were moving. :)

HEllo All,

Just gotta say Amen to Beck, I just recieved an insurance check from UPS on a package that I got off of e-bay six months ago.

Just seeing that package makes me want to buy something from you; got a four buss mixer for sale?

Unfortunately nothing for sale but, if anything, I hope my "packing project" examples serve as food for thought next time you or anyone else may be thinking of getting something shipped. I view packing as the most important fact to consider when buying on ebay, unless it's a local pickup ;)

You are the

Man!
..................................................................... ;)

Dave, I think it is firmly established that it is in fact YOU who is THE MAN around these parts! :D ;)

Hey, here's a thought: If any of you has some photos of damaged decks, mixers etc ... post 'em here.

Y'wanna do that here,...

or start another thread?

Nah,... here's good. That way the "good" packing is still featured.

I'll have to dig up some pics, (maybe), or take a few snaps.

;)

Yeah, I think here would be good, exactly as per your reasoning. Would keep this thread going which I believe is important.

Since my original post, I've modified my thinking about this a bit and would add / clarify that now I only recommend getting anything heavy shipped using a custom crate, forklifted and shipped via freight, truck etc ..... The packing showcase here, by itself, would truthfully not protect 100% against a really long fall such as from 6 feet up. This is more for bracing and protecting the item from stuff falling onto it and placing that on a pallet. There really needs to be more "GIVE" in the packing, for shipping it via the typical way where a lot of conveyor belts and throwing and falling goes on. The item, in this case the heavy recorder, when dropped in its box, cannot just hit a brick wall. The packaging needs to give way and sag for a while before stopping the item in its tracks. That way it'll absorb the shock, the packing that is. If a recorder is packed in styrofoam only then not a lot of GIVE happens. Enough to minimize damage but still not good enough. It only works if you know it won't get dropped but, trust me, it will. The packaging example, even less would be fine, is for shipping on a pallet and / or crate and not really via the standard route.

Oh yeah, if you're lucky to find something in its original box / packing then it also means you should have it crate shipped. Having it crated and shipped that way means you're almost free of any chance of rough handling and, more importantly, high, repeated drops, that most stuff goes through for a typical package. There are exceptions but you're always better off with crating.

On the other hand, there are select people that can and do package very well, with much thought going into it. Packages can and do survive falls with people who know how to pack. It's really a science this packing and it can be done well. Unfortunately most do not pack well and thus the best way is the crating, unless you know someone who does outstanding packing.

If someone can totally prevent damage to the inside (and outside) of a 50 lb recorder, falling 6 feet down in its packaging, then that someone deserves a medal!

Just a followup that certain oversized and really heavy items indeed must be crated and / or shipped on a pallet via truck, freight etc ..

(Do read many of the discussion posts in that second link as well).
