Today, I picked up a used Taylor Koa guitar from my used guitar dealer. (well, it's getting a rare-earth pickup installed, so I won't own it till friday)

In my mind and ears, it blew away everything, including most of the Martins. (every Martin I tried, in fact) - I didn't even want to leave the store and look anywhere else for fear it would walk away.

Anyone have any experience with this kind of guitar? You won't change my opinion, but I'm just trying to get a gauge of them. To me, it sounds like a lot sharper tones...but crisp and clear.

oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! That's too sweet. I've only
seen and played one. It disappeared quickly. Hold on to it for
dear life.

Fabulous Guitar

The Taylor K-14 is a magnificent guitar. I have a Taylor 714CE which has the same top as the K14 (Western Red Cedar) but different sides and back (Rosewood). I would love to someday buy a K14CE which is my dream guitar. IMHO, the K14CE and 714CE are the best sounding Taylor's. My 2 cents worth.

Ruebarb,

Congrats on your Taylor!!! I've played a K14C before....it was pretty sweet....it wasn't mine so I reluctantly had to return it to its rightful owner. A great guitar though.....I love the koa wood, both the tone and the beauty of the wood. Last October I ordered a Custom Shop decked out inlay-laden Larrivee that has reserve grade koa back/sides...finally got it a couple of months ago...the koa really sounds great and has a different tone than the rosewood or mahogany. I'm sure you'll be strumming that Taylor into your old age......

Again, congrats !!!

thanks...

It's still great...two months later...I'll have to post some mp3's at some point.

I'll tell you what I really like, though...the smell of that particular wood...not like cedar, but incredible.

I'm always telling people to stick their nose in the soundhole and smell..and they're always hesitant (wonder why?) - but they come up smiling.

That's a great guitar, and the smell is part of the experience. ;) I've played several Koa Taylors, and they were all excellent. I picked my 814-BCE (Brazilian Rosewood) over the Koa though, just my personal preference in the sound. The thing is, every Taylor I've ever played is very nice. Even the lowest models sound and play great, and won't kill your wallet.

not bad

Total came to $2200 - I've seen them new for $3000. - A little wear and tear in front...nothing more - I did pay a couple hundred more to get a Fishman Rare Earth pickup put in it.

I have NO idea why it was sold- pissed off ex-girlfriend or maybe just went broke. I remember the salesman talking about "resale" value....and I really didn't give a rat's behind. If I have a say...I'm never selling it.

Not your problem "why it was sold" ruebarb. Just play it and make beautiful music!
