Dudley, the SM7 (or SM7A) is the same as SM7B, except the armiture (the way the mic is mounted) is improved on the B. It's one of my favorite all purpose mics, especially for cabs.-Richie

And lastly, if you ever do any voiceover or narrative work, it will likely be your first choice.

I'm not sure that's really true, Chess. While the SM7 certainly has been used historically on tons of voiceovers, it's not necessarily because it is better for that kind of work than a high quality large diaphragm condenser. It's just a lot cheaper and sturdier.

Given a choice between a good Neumann, Lawson, Soundeluxe, Brauner, BLUE, etc. and an SM7, i'm betting the SM7 wouldn't win a blindfold test the vast majority of the time.

Of course, others may feel differently...

Oh. I didn't realize dudley already had these mics to choose from. My mistake! ;)

When you plug into the 1/4" input on the Q10 it does bypass the pre's. I read it in the manual, which you can download from Aardvark. If you e-mail though you'll get a response in a day or two at most. You can also call and get through almost every time.

I have a Q10 and really like it. The pre's are as good as mackie XDR's IMO. Maybe not as good as your topaz, but they are nice and transparent.

Congrats on the NTK and Dragonfly!

Yes, they both have Neutrik and the same preamps and can accept 1/4".
