My new C4's - the good and the bad so far - my review

No more than any of the other mics I listed previously as I checked all my mics with only one XLR and it wasn't until a couple of hours ago that I found the XLR's themselves suffered from variations.

So one conclusion could be that depending on which mic lead you pick up, you may get different degrees of tightness in different mics, add to that the obvious variations in the XLR's and it becomes "pot luck".

I remember years ago when I was doing "live" sound you never knew what you were going to get as the company I contracted to had a large number of mics and leads to pick from...........variations like this were just taken as a matter of course and no-one ever worried about it.

The cause of tightness can be anything from over generous electroplating on components to the XLR pins or sockets being slightly over-sized or out of alignment, as well as a few other causes I can think of. The thing is, this isn't something that happens only with SP mics, it can and does happen with other brands too.

Hummm, and that is the end that would plug into a mic.

Well then, let me ask you this...

In your opinion... could the mic problem that capnreverb referred to be considered a microphone quality control (QC) issue?
When you have a wide variation in the size of XLR plugs, how can it be a mic QC problem? Some XLR plugs don't fit my Neumann TLM103 very well either, or my Sennheisers, or my AKGs.

Do "all" your XLR plugs fit "all" your mics without any problems? Most engineers that I know of just live with it.

Oh ok, thanks... and yeah, all my cables fit ok.

I've got a few mics that are way tighter to plug in than others.

Geet73, the Shure KSM32 is sort of a small to medium sized condensor that comes in a little under 3/4" I think. Most folks think it's an LDC.
