My music sounds "Ribbed"... for my displeasure!

Hello all...

I spent all weekend recording a demo for my band. Everything worked fine, except for when I added that last bit of EQ, (Vegas Graphic EQ) after the mixdown, the whole tune comes out with a (difficult to describe) fluttering, 'ribbed' sound. It's only with the EQ effect. Is there a better way to eq after you're happy with the mix? I am certain it's not my system, (Athlon 1000, with 540 MB of ram) is there anyone else who's had this problem? Thanks again, this forum is great!

I'm not sure what the problem is exactly. I haven't encounter that sort of thing with that plug-in.

Maybe you could ask AlChuck or DavidK, I think they both use SF also.

Or pick up the book by Scott Garrigus. I think it is called Sound Forge Power?

I'm not fully sold on Sonic Foundary's EQ.

You might want to try a different software plugin, strictly for EQ. I use Waves' plugins, and they are EXCELLENT. Though I've never tried it, Sonic Timeworks has an EQ designed specifically for your purposes, amply-named "Mastering EQ." Again, I've never tried it, but everything else I've used from them is outstanding. Free trial versions are available, too.

Goog luck.

I have had a similar problem recording with Sound Forge. It's always when I forget to disable Norton Antivirus. I suggest always disabling antivirus programs when recording to hard drive or burning to disc.

This is actually kinda' funny . . .

I spent probably about 4 or 5 hours messing with the eq on some of my material. Much to my dismay, I played it back and heard the same "ribbed for my displeasure" . . . and realized I had the "save as" settings to 44.1khz, 8-bit.

Somewhere along the line, I must have accidentally changed the settings from 16 to 8 bit. God, I am such an idiot. Don't read any of my advice from now on. :) :) :)

Got a chance to check out Sonic Timeworks' mastering eq, by the way. The controls are not very intuitive . . . it is far from user-friendly, but the sound is out of this world. Extremely accurate. Timeworks just keeps pumping out more and more good stuff.

- peace
