I have a Samson Mixpad 9 (not for long at this rate!). I record to Sonar, and after arming the track, with both master and channel faders at 0 dB, I start to turn up the trimpot (with a mic in of course), and once it hits -10, The level meters start acting up.

All this while I thought it was my CPU fan that was the culprit, but now I know it has to be the pre-amp. Without a mic, I decided to max all the trims and faders, and the hiss was so bad, the level meaters were almost peaking in Sonar!!! Now if this isnt a case of useless noisy mic-pres, then I dunno what it is.

Will my problem be solved if I use a Mackie???

Thx

Soundcraft M-series, same price range, better board, better EQ, better preamps. If you get the Mackie now that I told you then you deserve it.

now there's a wonderful attitude.

last soundcraft i used was a ghost, and by the end of the session i desperately wanted to make it a ghost. noisy, three channels died (turns out, after a lot of tinkering that connectors were not wired properly... thus illustrating the rather poor QA program) and the entire session sounded like hell... the pre's colorized the sound making it very "heavy" (weighted down).

I suppose anyone who buys a soundcraft deserves it? (see how ridiculous that is?)

Only someone who doesn't have to worry about money would call two mixers with a 75% price difference in the "same price range."

Hmmm, well, even looking in musicians friend, the 8 channel Mackie (1642) is $849... the 8 channel Soundcraft M8 is $749.... I'd say that makes the Soundcraft a percentage CHEAPER. Hmmm.... only someone that doesnt have to worry about money would buy the Mackie, huh? :)

I think he would be looking at a Mackie1202 which is about half that cost. Of course he doesnt say what budget range...

My comparison was between the Spirit M4 @ 629$ (4 mic pres, 4 mono in and 4 stereo in) and the Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro @ $379 (4 mic pres, 4 mono and 4 stereo in). That's a 75% difference.

The 1642 is a 16 x 4 x 2 mixer with 8 mono ins, 4 stereo ins, and 10 mic pres (the 2 extra mic pres can be used in lieu of 2 of the stereo channels), and is a fundamentally different mixer than the M8, which is a 16x2 mixer with 8 mono ins, 4 stereo ins, and 8 mic pres. Neither of those is an "8-channel" mixer, unless you're talking mic pres, and then the Soundcraft is an 8 "pre" mixer.

However, the M8 is a nice price at 699$, when you consider that you get half that mixer (the M4) for only 70$ less.

I guess the best thing to do wld be to save up and get a Mackie 1604/1642. At least I don't want to get an interim and then regret having gotten that due to shortage of channels.

If you do that, save the extra $150 and get the 1604. You'll get and extra 4 pres, for a total of 16. But then you need 16 mics...
