My mastering plugins suck.

I'm primarily a poor guitarist, but am now also an even worse bassist since I started recording. I'd never played bass before I bought one around a year ago. I like it, but I'm not much good at it.

it's definitely a different instrument ....... NOT just a guitar with 4 big strings.
Here in Florida 90% of what i do is git/sax so I might go a couple of months between bass gigs and it always takes me an hour or so to get into a bass frame of mind. The concept is way different than git.
If I get a few bass gigs I quickly get back into it but it's not immediate if I've had any significant time off from it.

Yeah...sort of like going from drums to hand percussion,its a whole different frame of mind:rolleyes: :guitar:
 
Ive compressed my three bedroom home into a one bedroom apartment...its so fricken loud


anyway..I compress all things...then compress them again :o
 
I know I'm coming in late on this, but just had to put in two cents. I've mixed without comp and with comp and find that both play roles. Depends on what I'm mixing. My music runs the gammit from r&b to classical to heavy metal to country and back again, so some things (like a big beefy grand) need no compression if the mics are right. Some things (like a bass run through a lousy cab) need to be crushed. My biggest need for comp is cheap equipment. A cabinet with poor symmetry that plays A at +3 db to D needs some comp on the solos! (And honestly needs more, like a dumpster), but that's what we deal with in home!

Interestingly, I had a baseball injury when I was a child that left my middle finger shortened to where all three of my fingers on my right hand are the same length (ring through pointer) and I used that to great advantage when I made my living playing bass. Even tone is second nature!
