My LDC

Hi, I have owned a LDC for a while now and never really used it. I had a small gig coming up and thought i'd buy another and use them as overheads. With my second one came a sheet with frequency charts polar patterns etc. I also bought a kick mic and a copy of an SM57. The gig was so small that i didn't need to mic the kit. I did anyway, but only really used the kick and snare mics. It sounded really good, but now I'm wondering about these LDC. Is the frequency chart below any good? The response is 40Hz-18kHz, and the mic is super cardioid.

Also, what direction does the polar pattern show.

I guess I don't really understand the question.

First of all, the chart you attached was the frequncy response graph, not the polar chart, but you said the mic is super cardioid, so I'm assuming the pattern is, and this is just a guess, um, super cardioid? ;)

I'm not really trying to be a smartass or make you feel dumb because we've all been where you are. I'm really just trying to help you.

I think you need to rephrase your question, because I honestly don't know what it is you want to know, and I doubt anyone else does either, which is partially why no one's responded to you.


So let's try again.

"Is the frequency chart below any good?" I know it was the frequency response chart, but i said that the sheet had frequency response, polar pattern, etc. Yeh i know the polar pattern of a super cardioid is...super cardioid, that is why i said it is super cardioid. The kind of bum shape, lol. Btw I'm not the newbie you think, you read what I said wrong, or maybe i worded it wrong. I mean, is the frequency response good for an LDC? Is it best for drum overhead micing? Would it suffice elsewhere? And, where is the direction for the most pickup, but big kenny says north/north west. Do you mean completely opposite side from the xlr input?
 
Well, first off, that mic isn't an LDC. Superlux packages the same mic in two different versions but it's the same mic. One is the ECO-H6A and the other is the HO-8 in the drum mic packages. I've taken these mics apart before. The capsule is about the size of a dime and is electret.

It is a side-address microphone, though.
 
The frequency chart you showed is what's called an "averaged" chart. It doesn't show all the minor deviations that a full chart would show. That being said, the chart is fairly flat and very usable as an overhead mic. I've used this one on snare and it sounded good.

Try it on different things and see if you like it. There are certainly better mics out there, but this could be useful on quite a few things.

I thought it was, 'cause when i bought it it was advertised as LDC. Side-address microphone, so what side, lol?
 
I will find out when i try recording it, but i haven;t had the opportunity yet, even though I've had it over a year, lol. I used it live for overheads, but couldn't really hear it much 'cause the place was small and the drums were loud, lol.
 
Took my mics to college today to try them out. Sounds pretty good to me, a little harsh though. I tried both sides and they sounded the same, lol. I'll try and get a copy so i can post it. Btw the mic was/is £20 new, at thomann. It obviously doesn't sound amazing, but for the price, it is.
