Hi all,

I just found this forum today, due to a random outbreak of home recording fever and with the help of google (search: "home recording studio forum" first hit). After reading around, I found this section and thought I'd see about getting a little critique on my first attempt at home recording; a guitars and bass song that I wrote, played, and recorded around the end of January.

Note: I won't say how I feel about it right away, so that I don't influence how you folks hear it.

And for fun, here was my set up that day:

Note: the headphones with the mic on it, right above the corner of the throw rug, is what I used to record from the floor speaker. There are probably a lot of you screaming "WHY!?" right now, but I make do with what I've got.

I really like the song! Nice writing. It has a suprisingly good mix, and of course the quality could have been better, but for your first attempt it is pretty good! What did you use to record/mix software wise?

I scored a copy of FL Studio 9 (I think that's the right number) from my "best friend" at the time. He's the type of kid who's parents will get them anything (I used his mexican strat for years) and I found that sitting around and plopped it on my computer. Unfortunately I no longer have the software due to a combination of upgrading my OS and getting rid of him (he was a horrible friend), so I'm going to have to dish out some money soon if I want to keep using that program.

Also, I was on windows 7 32bit at the time.

Edit: Also forgot to say, due to work hours running out, thank you for the surprisingly good comments!

first of all welcome to the site..

the clinic works best if you add comments to others...they are more likely to critique yours

secondly...thats quite a clear little mix you've got there...I can hear a few things behind that making a song..a solid little sketch and good playing...

thirdly forget FL and download Reaper here

it'll have everything you need in a DAW and isnt crippled after the demo time runs out...just pay for the licence when you can :)

Not too shabby, my friend - and welcome to HR.com! This place has turned me into a person who thought he knew how to record stuff, into a person who now can turn most recordings into something people will actually want to listen to!

Your recording isn't bad, but it isn't good, either. For a first-ish recording, I think it sounds pretty decent. The room you're recording in is coming through loud and clear. Gotta fix that. I also hear intermittent static throughout.

Not bad! Keep at it.
