I had a co-worker who posted (in a highly visible location) a Far Side cartoon where a boy is raising his hand in class and asking "Please Teacher, can I go home? My head is full." She had replaced 'Teacher' with the name of our Director.

Yamaha has recently released the 01X. Physically it looks like a mixer and indeed it is a digital mixer. It is also a control surface using the Mackie/Logic control protocol. It is a soundcard providing up to 24bit/96Khz A/D conversion. It uses mLAN (a superset of Firewire) to communicate with a DAW (the DAW is not a mLAN device so it ignores the mLAN data). Any mLAN components that you connect to the 01X are automatically recognized and configured, no DAW required (e.g., Kurzweil KSP8 w/mLAN card installed). It has eight balanced analog inputs, all with preamps, two of which are XLR inputs with phantom power, one a selectable Hi-Z. The preamps are alleged to be very clean, improved versions of the preamps used in Yamaha's top-of-the-line digital mixer. In addition to the mLAN and analog inputs, you can also plug in MIDI, and S/PDIF.
The 01X provides Steinberg VST Instruments effects (Vocal Rack, FinalMaster, and Pitch Fix) regardless of whether or not it is connected to a DAW.

Just when I thought I had all my ducks in a row, Yamaha rolls this thing down the aisle.
Ouch!
