soundboy...

My musical tastes are firmly stuck in heavy rock.. and since the kick of the drums didn't come through at all on the mp3 (I'm listening thru pc speakers.. so I'm not sure if that is a factor), that was the first thing I noticed.. I really liked the vocals but I think they should be pushed back a little in the mix.. Was the lead guitar recorded direct? Playing of that calibre definately deserves a warmer tone from a mic'd amp with a bit more reverb.. maybe even panned a bit to the side..

I was a little disappointed that I couldn't hear the rest of the track.. I liked where it was going.. great vocalist..

boosting the high eq on the kick drumm would perk up the tune a little (so you hear the impact of the peddle when it hits.

the singer had a monotone thing going for him . this may have been intended but i would have used falsetto at the end of some of the verses kind of like DIO would.

The bass guitar wasnt very dominate either.

you improve these things and It will be cool

Im glad you put that "dont spare my feelings" disclaimer in there. Otherwise I would have.

The vocals are bad. Horribly EQed. It sounds like they were pulled out at 900 or 1100Hz like 12db too much and at 4 or 5k as well.

Was that a guitar being played? I couldnt tell.

The song was bad. It was so bad I couldnt listen to it twice. I wouldnt bother trying to fix what was wrong with it.

:D Thanks for the advice. I will take it all into stride. Oh and as for you MR. JUSUMPILGRIM............thanks. A lot of time people don't want to discourage you from the music so they try to give you encouraging responses. I say bring the pain. You dont have to worry about discouraging me nothing can. I just need lessons to learn from. Encouragment is welcomed also though. Thanks all

Rythm guitar sounded a bit fizzy, too much high end? Would agree vocal EQ needed work unless you wanted that sound, which I have heard. Liked the vocals, reminded me of Jim Morrison on stuff like Cars Hiss by My Window. Wouldn't say monotone but purposefully understated?

God I'm wondering If I should be brave enough to let you alls listen to some of my stuff, gulp.

Listen, soundboy, I apologize. Everybody starts somewhere. You shouldve heard my first demo 15 years ago. God. The writing was horrible, the singing (not mine) horribly out of key, etc. the drumming was good though (I played drums ;) ) And this was with an engineer who supposedly did work on the movie "dumb and dumber." He probably made sandwiches for the engineers.

Anyway, youre probably not monitoring properly. Computer speakers are not monitors. Also spend time working on writing. Dont write whole songs, write verses and choruses and just focus on that and what can be improved. After that think about structure, etc Take things one step at a time, i.e. harmony, melody, rhthym, etc Learn some theory, listen to your favorite records and try and figure out why they sound so great. Good luck.

I liked the song and the groove.....guitar part coulda used more variation.....as far as sonic suggestions, its hard to tell what was mixing errors and what was the product of a 48kbps encoding....id suggest at least 128kbps or even 192 kbps if you need input on the recording aspect.....

Not that I'm one to talk, but there seems to be tracking issues, as well as the mixing. But I think under the harshness, you've got something pretty good.

I'll be honest - I didn't like the sound of the guitars at all. But I don't like a lot of that tapping stuff to begin with - and I don't like that glassy, flangy, etc type of guitar sound. But I do think there's a song there. And I really liked the vocal performance/style.

I'm surprised no one asked, but I will - what recording gear was used?

Regards

:D :D :D It appears to me that i didn't state my position in this correctly. When i say i recorded it i did just that and that alone. I didn't write or play on it. Afriend of mine played all the instruments guitar bass keys and looped drums. I needed you guys to point out my errors in recording eqing and such, which most of you did. thanks again

GEAR USED

cubase
mic modeler(sm57 turned into a ksm32)
some no name distoration/efx box for his guitar
gina24 sound card
some no name keyboard for the rhythm
tc works reverb
waves limiter
hp550MHz
wavelab3( minor editing)
This song was not mastered(but i didn't have to tell you guys that)
I wanted to bypass his distortion box and use a distortion plugin but he objected so up went the noise level. He also didn't want to switch out a couple of his cables which were adding noise so up stayed the noise level

yeah that distortion box has got to go..

I guess the best way for a guitarist's ego to be knocked down is to be criticized or ridiculed by his audience after the fact for the sound he insisted on using..

Working for the good of the music is what separates a mature musician or artist from just "a guitar playing dude".. All I know is if I was in a studio and the engineer told me to lose a piece of gear because it was detrimental to the recording.. I would give his suggestions serious consideration and would be open to whatever suggestions were made.. at least that's the attitude Jimmy Page had when he was learning through session work.. whatever happened to him anyway?;)

Jimmy Page?

He works at my brother in law's restaurant on 48th and 5th Ave. He plays theolonius monk covers on monday nites...tux and all. :D

:D :D I wasn't charging him to record so i guess it didn't seem as serious to him. I have learned that ehen money is involved things are quite different. Why cant everybody do it for the love of the music. Dont get me wrong pay your bills but engineers charge a reasonable price and focus on the music, Musicians be willing and ready to pay what the engineer is worth and focus on the music. A llot of good tunes came from cats just kickin around in their garage.

Wait isn't that how the computer was invented?:D :D

Jimi page

The latest Ive heard he cant tour anymore because his back is a wreck from playing that doubleneck.

In case you actually want to know.......

That was during the Black Crowes tour. He recently did a set with Plant at the Sun Records Tribute thing.
