Just push mixes without vocals. Kind of fun stuff really.

All are fairly small files as the songs are pretty short. Epics by Punk Rock standards though....;)

IMO guitars should be waaaay more upfront... It sounds to nice for punk. Great snare sound.

I thought the guitars were out front enough..at least to my ears. Gotta love that bass player...made my fingers hurt just listening. Would of loved to heard vox that goes along with these tracks, like looking at chinese people, the tunes sounded the same :D. The drums (snare) really sounded as good as I've heard>> did you record this at echo-star Ed?

I am a staff engineer at a friends studio called Opal studio. It is a little 32 track project studio housing a Yamaha O2R (yuk!) and ADAT XT 20's. Gear?

O2R
4X ADAT XT 20's
Focusrite Red
Drawmer 1960
TL Audio Classic (mine)
TL Audio Ivory Quad
ART Pro MP
2X ART Dual MP (mine)
2X Joe Meek VC3Q
2X Nuemann U 87
AKG 414
3X AT 4033 (two are mine)
AT 4050
AT 4051
ADK TC-51 tube mic
1 set of Audix D series
57's and 58's...blah blah
Yamaha NS 10's and Sundholm monitors powered by a Hafler P-4000 amp
LOT'S of Monster cabling (my secret...;))

It is a pretty small facility but with 4 seperate room, 5 if you include the upstairs editing/mastering room. I have been working out of there for the past couple of month now. Business is good! :)

Meshuggah, I have heard plenty of newer punk that sounds quite a bit nicer than this! I was asked half way through tracking (it is ALWAYS after the drum tracks are laid that they ask......sigh.....) to co-produce this. Yup. I would have personally done things quite a bit different for sure, but by the time they got around to asking, most of the instrument tracking was already done.

The challenge here is that we only spent 3 days tracking all the parts for 15 songs. Only 8 hours to mix, which I do tomorrow.

Not being a smart-ass...okay I am, while these three mixes sound very good, I've listened to much better from you two yrs ago on the Ghost board and just a fraction of the gear you just mentioned.

signed David...the smart-ass

p.s. Ofcourse it was diffrent talent also;)

I totally agree David. I hold the O2R 100% responsible for how harsh and lifeless my latest stuff has been. I am no digital console fan at all! In fact, they all suck, just like computer mixing.

The Ghost is a nice console which puts it's mark on the sound. Mainly though, I think the Ghost gives my mixes a "gel" that digital mixers never will. Also, there is depth in the sound using good analog mixers. Digital mixers usually lack that depth. Yes, good frequency response, but horrible depth.

Well, what can you expect from a $10,000 console that has full automation. Not much really....:(

Again, this is not finale mixes, this is just what is worked up to this point in the heat of tracking. Very little eq on anything. Also, this was very quick tracking by a very inexperienced band. I couldn't place drum mics anywhere close to where I wanted them because the drummer was totally inflexible in his setup and had everything totally bunched together.

Both guitar players had incredibly cheap guitars, and I totally had to compromise on tones with them. I was looking for something a little cleaner, but they would have it.

The bass player played a Rickenbacher. We ran he straight into one side of the Drawmer. I tried getting a bit more of a meatier sound out of the bass, but he pick right in front the the bridge, so like they always say, you cannot add what is not there eh? Had I had more of a budget to work with I would have mic'ed a bass cabinet. But alas! Only three days to track 15 songs. These guys needed most of that time just to get their parts right.

So just out of curiosity...how much do you charge for 3 days of tracking? I am just wondering what the going rates are. Here where I live in Canada it's $25 (canadian) per hour.

Its not horrible. I would give the guitars more aggressive midrange bite. Im surprised the bass is so thin.....probably in the sum total of things, as has been said many times- analog is more forgiving than digital. It requires less EQ to make the "gel" happen but thats not to say the gel cant happen digitally. It just takes longer. Im sure itll all work when youre done with it. Either way its not gonna hurt this bands career. :)

I like this stuff. The vocals will make or break these tunes. If its a whiny greendayesque singer, it will be so-so, but a piercing active voice would really make these songs stick.

Sounds a little like a band I play guitar in...
But then again, all punk sounds the same:rolleyes:

It would be cool to hear the finals.

The mixes were fine, Ed...

....it's the "playing" that I don't like. :D

the tube mic..

bugger off, i found my answer, never trust faulty estores with info.

arse.

punkrock... pffff...
What is that??? Child-punk?

(Haven't had the time to take a listen... Maybe later. Punkrock. tsss...)

Sorry, couldn't listen. IE wouldn't let me download. It says the page has been moved.

I currently only have 10mb of server space, so these were removed to make room for newer stuff.

I will soon have more server space than I can possibly think of using, and will post on here when it is all up on it.

Thanks for the interest though guys!
