I totally agree David. I hold the O2R 100% responsible for how harsh and lifeless my latest stuff has been. I am no digital console fan at all! In fact, they all suck, just like computer mixing.
The Ghost is a nice console which puts it's mark on the sound. Mainly though, I think the Ghost gives my mixes a "gel" that digital mixers never will. Also, there is depth in the sound using good analog mixers. Digital mixers usually lack that depth. Yes, good frequency response, but horrible depth.
Well, what can you expect from a $10,000 console that has full automation. Not much really....
Again, this is not finale mixes, this is just what is worked up to this point in the heat of tracking. Very little eq on anything. Also, this was very quick tracking by a very inexperienced band. I couldn't place drum mics anywhere close to where I wanted them because the drummer was totally inflexible in his setup and had everything totally bunched together.
Both guitar players had incredibly cheap guitars, and I totally had to compromise on tones with them. I was looking for something a little cleaner, but they would have it.
The bass player played a Rickenbacher. We ran he straight into one side of the Drawmer. I tried getting a bit more of a meatier sound out of the bass, but he pick right in front the the bridge, so like they always say, you cannot add what is not there eh? Had I had more of a budget to work with I would have mic'ed a bass cabinet. But alas! Only three days to track 15 songs. These guys needed most of that time just to get their parts right.
