OK- Now it's time to take a poke at Richie. God knows I've been brutal on those rare occasions when I had something to say. Understand this. The cut is not *mixed*. It is a mono house mix. There is absolutely no panning, no EQ, no reverb, no compression. I could easily make this stuff sound better, but I'm trying to get clean dry tracks for Littledog to mix up pretty. The whole project is almost ready for the mixing engineer, so I'll give you tracks as they become ready. The acoustic was recorded with a single AKG C414B-ULS into Avalon AD2022 into a Roland VS1824CD. Main vox with B.L.U.E. Kiwi into the Avalon. Carolyn's vocal was done with an Oktava MK319 into a Joemeek twinQcs, with the optocompressor engaged, but disabled (ratio 1:1). In other words, I used it as a filter. Studio Projects C-4's X-Y for overheads, into the Joemeek. Snare was mic'd with the 414 on top, padded like a mother (40dB) into the Avalon, and Shure SM7B underneath, into DBX386, then by S/PDIF to the recorder. Kick is AKG D112 also into the Avalon. Fretless bass direct into the Avalon.
For those of you who are old hippies, the song is *very* loosely based on a song by Paul Kantner called "Martha" from Jefferson Airplane's 1967 album "After Bathing at Baxter's". My brother wrote the words the day he listened to "Bark" by Jefferson Airplane, and realized the band was finished. I put it to music. The tuning is DADDAD, the same tuning Stephen Stills used on "4+20" and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes". I hope y'all enjoy listening as much as I have enjoyed laying down these tracks. Let the games begin! Here's the link.-

Peace- Richie

P.S.- I'm technochallenged, so if the link doesn't work, just go to nowhereradio.com and search Richie Monroe.
We also left out a credit for Bill Van Pelt, who played the fretless bass. We'll fix it in the morning. The drummer is the board's own Rimshot. God, it is sooo cool to have "staff".-Richie

these parts are played and sang with just the right precision and touch for LD to work with. . very nice arangement . Yall got a nice blend on the harmonies. Kinda along the seals and croft lines. I`m very entertained and hope to hear it after its mixed.. :)

Poke! :D

vox varies in V man.....
guitar at the begining is stelllar...it loses it when the vox comes in though....Great playing man....:D
snare and brushes are too loud...
sticks sound good at the beginning...
I don't hear a kick at all...
bass is buried...needs volume...perhaps definition as well..
Harmony vox seems too loud and too close to the lead vox......

Poke! :D
Joe :D

Ow, the pain! Well, as you can tell, whatever I am, it's not a mixing engineer. I'm a story teller, Jim, not an engineer! Joro, I have no doubt all your criticisms are valid. In the beginning, all I had to mix was one voice and one guitar. You can't learn too much doing that. Now I have these dense mixes with multiple drum tracks and backing vox, etc., and mixing this stuff is out of my league. I'm learning, but I think it will be quite a while before I can mix a finished product. Kick will always be light on this tune, but LD may mix it up a bit. I'm as interested as anyone to hear what these tracks will sound like mixed well.
And mommy, do you think I could have some reverb now? For 35 some odd years, I've sung into dynamics with reverb. Now it's brutal condensers bone dry. I want my fucking reverb back...Richie

P.S.- There were no brushes used on this cut, just jazz sticks.

Lovely tune - I share your headspace.
I'm a newbie to this BBS but not to the biz or the music. This is a really faithful recreation of a vibe that didn't last long enough for me. I'm anxious to hear the final mix.

Musicianship is excellent - dynamic amd driving - but not forced or contrived - amazing what playing within the confines of a simple tuning can do to the creative process. I can tell you've 'been there.' You can't play this stuff from a book.

I'll follow up for the final mix - should be awesome!!

Nice to meet ya!

It's the high hat man...my faux pas... :D

BTW....The tune is really good man...
Best of luck on your CD project Richie,
Joe

I like this tune a lot. I realize that it's unprocessed but there is a few little things. It sounds a litlle veiled and as stated the kick is gone. By the way Bark was one of my all time fav albums (Third Week In Chelsea rules). Ever hear Blows Against The Empire? My absolute fav from them.

Well yes, Track Rat. I played JA covers for quite a while, and I've probably heard as much of it as anyone short of Al Schmitt and Maurice. "3rd week in the Chelsea" is a lovely song, and the lyrics are just part of the package that revealed the impending end of Airplane.
Speaking of having "staff", yeah the personnel on"Blows Against the Empire" was a who's who of San Francisco psychedelic rock. It was more or less duplicated on "Sunfighter" and David Crosby's "If Only I Could Remember my Name."
Now, over time, I will post up some other goodies. We run the gamut on this project from medieval lap harp with classical guitar, zarb, and viola to early 1980's jock rock. You haven't lived until you've seen 50-something folkies play what might as well be Deep Purple or early Ted Nugent. Don't doubt this- we are having fun here at bardwire. I swear this project is the most fun I've had in 30 years.-Richie

P.S.- Got it guys- mix up the kick drum.

dude, you have a very high dollar recording channel going there then you post a 96 kbps mp3! what's up? at least give us 192.

the performance is solid.

hihats and cymbals sound pretty good (but with the mp3 mangling i have no idea what they really sound like). snare sounds like a cardboard box unfortunately. the whole drumkit sounds very mono without a lot of good stereo spread (some people don't like that though). can't even hear the bass drum.

bass guitar is a little muddy sounding.

again, post something at a higher bitrate cause i'm not sure how much of this is just the encoding.

Break out the Sun Guns and lets hear some more. I like what you're doing my friend.

Sounds great Richard. I can't wait to hear the finished product!

Nice Nice Nice. I hear Fleetwood Mac (kinda). Finally a vocal thats in tune!

Sounds great thru' my cheap cans...well done. It takes me back to my old album collection...thats a complement ;)

......Framingham...we're neighbors!

Sounds good Richie, except the drums. There's no room ambience at all. I would think for this style of music you'd want some of the natural room ambience.
By the way, we met at Guitar Center around Xmas '02.
We stood by the glass mic case and you gave me the lowdown on some of the mics they had. You were still in the process of building your studio. Remember? (tall skinny guy).

Good luck!

Tom

Download not enabled? :(

Can't listen now. I usually dl a few at night and take to work for listening. Maybe I can catch it when I have a little more time :(

Hello, Dim! I do remember. Well, I think my room is indeed pretty dead, but I killed it on purpose. If a little electronic ambience is called for, I bet the nice mixing engineer will do it. I've become used to listening to dry tracks. I also know I could do a lot with a little EQ, but it's not my job. I think that most of what you're looking for will be there when it has become a finished product. I also believe that my wife posted it up at a resolution that's too low, and it will sound different- soon.-Richie

"Requiem"- Coming to you now at a higher resolution. Basic problem there is, the MP3 was ripped from a CD. The raw tracks are 24 bit 96 khz. Best I can do with the available technology. Downloading the files direct from the hard drive to the PC is not currently an option. Hope you can hear a little more, Erich.-Richie

ahhhhhh, much better fidelity. really like the hihats now :).

don't know about the snare and crash though?

In my opinion, Reich, the tracks are there, it's a pure mixing issue. Whatever I am, it's not a mixing engineer. More songs will follow.-Richie
