I agree...haha - being a drummer myself, and having recorded many shitty drummers - nothing drives me more crazy then a shitty one.
not that this drummer is terrable or anything - at least he's keepin a beat steady!


also though - the drums even sound bit "fake" to me...cant really describe it....

love the guitar sounds.....and i like the bass even more. did you mic an amp for that or what? if so, what mic?

It all went through a guitar pod. I did not know that the guitar pod had bass simulations.

I did not mess with the bass. He set it in the pod and I just recorded direct

the distor guitars were miced with a 4033 and an sm57. I think I should have eqd some low into them to make them more ballsy

I really don't have anything to add that wasn't said before, but I just wanted to tell you I really enjoyed it, and that's npt really the kind of music I usually appreciate. Except for the drums, which really annoyed me (a lot more to do with the playing then the recording), that's one awsome job. New drummer and they're ready to go.

a puchy kick drum

here's how i get good sounds from my beta 52... i have an aquraine(i think i spelled that right) super kick drum head on the
back and a plane remo with a muffuling ring on the front with a small hole down to the right about 4-5". lay the beta 52 on a peice of foam sheet about 8"/1' long almost tuching the back head. on a paramitrc eq cut 18- bass and boost 18+ hi's on the kick drum channel only. then boost about 10+ hi's on the kick track. leave the bass eq flat on the the channel. (unless the kick drum sound a little weak) then turn the gain on the kick channel
just enough to where the kick does not distort.



what i just said may sound stuped but i really works.

thanks for that. The drumset they used was a stage set that they use every tuesday night for a program in my school. It was in dire condition and we did not even do anything to try to make it sound better. I should have asked them to do SOMETHING, anything, to make it tighter.

I think you did a great job on the vocals esp...

they are *right there*...reminds me of basically every major label rock act I hear these days. thats a good thing (at least from the bands perspective i'm sure..heh)

Somehow the snare sounds very compressed, but I'm not sure. I guess it's just that sounding on it's own. The kick was kinda boomy in a wrong sort of way. If you can, I'd try reducing some frequencies around 200hz. I'm not sure, but it sounds like it COULD correct some of the bad boominess. I'm not that good at mixing drums. At least not real ones, but that's what came into mind. Otherwise, the mix is good. I can be totally wrong about the mixing help, so don't take me too serious about that part.

The vocals definitely sound the best on this. The main problem (to me), as others have said, is the balance and the low end. When the guitars come in, the low end doesn't support it. And when the guitars are out, it just seems kinda bizarre to me, just slapping sorta bass and drums. Maybe the guitars should do something there, open chords or something. I've tried the Pod on bass, and it never worked for me, just didn't have the bottom end. Maybe on the kick and bass, try New York compression (which I just asked about here ), where you compress the kick (and bass) and mix it back in with itself to make it fatter and punchier. I've been experimenting with it, and I think it helps a lot. And maybe that would help with the balance between the low end and the cymbals, etc. Also, maybe, paste in some kick hits where the cymbal was hit with no kick.

That vocal sounds excellent! I'm envious of that sound. Everything sounds pretty pro and considering you did this in a dorm room it's even more impressive. The only sore spot is the drummer which I think is obvious.
