hey i've been working more on the mixes of my current project now that i've dumped to the computer. here is one called doldrums.
what do you guys think?

5.43Mb 192kbps mp2

hey kristian,

this is really nice. I like that feel good feel its got.

That mic sounds really vintage. Or is it a dynamic posing as a vintage? What mic was that? I think the vox could be a bit louder though.

Did this get mastered. THe high end is rolled off on all the instruments in a way that I really like.

Funk on!

Bloody nora

Outstanding quality of recording. Just perfect. It sounds proffesionally recorded.

Oh yeh, I liked it too!

CyanJaguar - Its a AKG C414buls on the voice if thats what you were asking. It wasn't mastered, thats a mix i spent about 4 hours on when i got home from my exam in the late morning. I noticed that with the instruments they dont sound overly hyped. Now i recorded with every EQ flat, and i mixed without touching EQ. And i'm curious because everything else i hear always has more highend then the stuff i record. I tend to keep all EQs flat while tracking and mixing. Do other people lather on the high end? im not sure, but i haven't found a place to put the EQ. The only thing i sometimes wonder about is how to fit the digeridoo in the mix sometimes.

Erland - thanks :) i get paid so its supposed to sound professional!

In the loud part right before the transition at 1:10 I couldn't hear the low end on the drums enough, but when the quiet part started and the soft kicks came in (first one @ 1:12) they were dialed in sweet. The guitar tones sounded very PODish but the tightness of the performance made this insignificant. The vocals could stand to be a bit louder in a few places.

>The only thing i sometimes wonder about is how to fit the digeridoo in the mix sometimes.

C'mon- I know you wonder about other shit as well!

And how to fit the digeridoo in the mix?

Sparingly applied
Like the diethyl amide!

yea, like diethyl amide... could you even hear it poking out every once in a while? I can, but of course i know exactly where it is.

and no POD here, just a fender twin.

I'm not looking at any freq. analysis or any other BS, but it does sound like it was run thru a low pass filter...or shelved off at 8k fairly drastically.
I'd like to hear a better separation between things...especially the drums and the vocals...they seem to occupy the same space and panorama a lot of the times....right down the middle. The drums do have some action off to the sides, but for some reason seem to take up the middle alley by far the most.
The quieter parts are very nice, and "open up" much more, and are more musical to me as well.
I don't understand the digeroo and the laughing at the end...but, that's not important.
The mix also has a very *dry* sound to it...kinda like it was recorded in a padded cell:p I think that since there is no ambiance at all (or at least none that I could hear) takes away any front to back balance in the mix, and that is what this mix seems to suffer the most from. I like to hear a "space"...even if very subtle, and I struggle to hear one here.... personal preference, I suppose.
I understand no EQ with tracking...but not sure I agree with keeping things flat all the way thru...just for the sake of it...or whatever reason. Maybe you have the hearing of a dog, and that's why you keep things dialed back!! But, if it sounds good to you, and other stuff seems "hyped" in the high end...maybe you have a reason, but I'd look towards your monitoring situation with a keener eye.

Nice tune, great playing, btw.

thanks for posting some updates...

ok update again!

3/5ths of the band came in today, and we did a mammoth mixing session after i ran a race today in the morning. This version has a demented ending but its probably just going to fade out, they were getting some fun out of just having that at the end. I can't tell if i like it or not, im siding on the not liking it. BUT, everything else, i like this mix so much more. I actually got to spend time on it and use some FX and EQ which i don't mind doing, i just didn't last time.

ah...I changed my mind...the other 2/5ths of the band needed to be there....

you need to go race again...run, run, run....

laughter is good...good, good, good.....

you can't decide...flip a coin, flip a coin...flip a coin....

oh...vocals...too low...too low..too low...

I'm grumpy tonight, so bear with me.

Sounds "flat." The acoustic sounds like it cost $20, and the drums come across a bit "cardboard"ey.

I have no suggestions on how to fix that, either. Maybe boost the highs on the acoustic and let the cymbals ring out, dunno.

Like I said, grumpy.

:(

p.s., I like his voice on "Stumblespun," but the vocal phrasing on this song just doesn't do anything for me. Think of a better-connotated synonymn for "Whiney" if you need to tell him for any reason...
