Yeah my Boss Br8 finally died and has been thrown into the trash, I need a new recorder 8 or 16 track is cool 16 bit is cool too but I have no idea what to buy, I would like one with a CD Burner but a friend has a korg d1600 and you have to bounce down to 2 tracks to burn a CD and I didn't like that so I want to ask a question here:

what is a cool unit with 8 or 16 tracks and cdr that I dont need to bounce down to 2 tracks ? does such a recorder even exhist ?

The Korg 1600MKII can export individual wav files to CD without a bounce opperation. You only need to bounce when you are mixing down a song. The Korg is a great machine, I wouldn't pass it over too quickly. Check out the Korg forums at www.korgstudios.com, 99% very happy users there.

Yo Kowajoy & et. al:

I might be wrong, as I am often, but most all digital recorder, SIAB [studios in a box] mix down to a stereo two track before you can burn a CD, on board or outboard.

Many SIABs can import wave files which still have to be put into a stereo track in order to burn the CD, I think.

When you do the stereo mix, it's the final chance to add EQ, FX, compression to the song before you burn the CD. Most SIABs compile of list of your stereo mixes and you call up that list when you want to burn a CD. Of course, you can burn one song but that would waste a great deal of space on a CD. Once you finalize the CD, can't go back and add to it. That is, the CDR, not the erasible CD.

Korg is cool; Yam is cool; I hear things about Roland units that make me shy away from them but I'm sure they work quite well too.

I don't know what your budget is, but before making a decision, I would encourage you to look at the Akai DPS24. I recently got one and it's probably the best All-In-One out there (I know some Roland VS users might disagree). Lots of inputs, excellent mic-pres, very good converters, extremely flexible and intuitive UI, expandability and great support- all of these things are reasons I chose it.

I do think the Korg is probably an excellent unit though. Before the DPS24, I had (still do, actually) a Yamaha AW2816 which is a nice unit though I never liked the UI.

And I think GreenHoret is probably right. I don't see how you can "burn" a CD without converting it to stereo tracks first. Unless you are talking about making back-ups of tracks or transferring files, but that's not generally what people mean when they talk of "burning" a CD.

My boss died, and I swear I was out of town at the time...

That tape was doctored, and the experts hired by my legal counsel will prove that.

As everyone has stated, most CD tracks are 2-track stereo mixes. Most of the digital recorders out there will let you export the tracks individually as a .wav or other format. Are you planning on using your computer to mix? Or do you want to do it all in the unit? There are options for both.

I have burned a mono wave file to a cd and it works, now I'm trying to remember where that is and wondering if I really did that, but I think I did, unless i'm not remembering it correctly, I guess it's time for dinner, feed the brain...

I think your question is about loosing 2 of your 16 tracks by bouncing down to them. Well, now that I have the Korg D1600 mkii, I can tell you more about it. I thought that was the case also, loosing 2 of the 16 or 8 or whatever. But the Korg can bounce down to 2 virtual tracks for your stereo track to be burned. so you can mix down 16 and bounce to 2 virtuals. I think you can also mix 14 and 2 inputs live to 2 vituals. So you won't loose any of the unit's claimed track capacity.
