I think I'm making progress. If you had heard some of my early recordings you would be sure to agree. This time it's not my band it's a friend (probably one of the big factors). We are working together to record his album. Here's the song:
Still Waters Run Shallow

All comments welcome. There's not much in the way of mixing to be done cos it's solo guitar + vocals. I have made a few moves to warm up the sound though. Feeling rather pleased with myself... hope you folks like it.

Apart from the pops and clicks... obviously. They are a bugger!

Any way to remove/tame them? I love the take otherwise.

And the lyrics for those of you who won't get the Scottish accent:

Don't waste your time
Looking for treasures you won't find
This pool has no deep end
Don't dive in
You'll hit rock bottom
hit rock bottom

Don't break the skin
Looking for beauty held within
This life has no deep end
Don't dive in.
You'll hit rock bottom
hit rock bottom
hit rock bottom
hit rock bottom

Nice job Al. The close vocal mic'ing (guessing from the sound) makes it sound very intimate. Nice realistic guitar sound. A few spots where the vocal might be just a touch hot in the 350-450 Hz range.

Wow... posts don't stay on the page 1 for long these days! Is the mixing clinc too popular for it's own good?

Thanks Tim and Creep.

Hey Handsome Al - yeah these tunes hit page 7 before you know it (lol). Very nice recording and equally nice song/performance....Like what you did with the acoustic, and the vocals are very big and full.

sweet tune. the vocal sound is off to me though....like the character of his voice is'nt coming thru. i do like his voice.

Page three with the dolly birds mate,
Nicely recorded - might need to ride the faders a little bit more on a couple of breaths & a small explosive. Try not to compress.
Interesting vocal qualities to match the sound of a real guitar.
Are ya gonna do more - seems like an intro waiting to go.
A handsome song handsomely sung.
Cheers

hey man....good tune...only thing I noticed(im a singer) is that he is very pitchy.

Im not a "secular" recording guy , only do classical so I cant comment there, but musically or vocally at least he could brush up on his flat notes...sometimes he scoops up to the pitch...if he could think about landing "on top" of the note hed do better...but his voice is very nice and haunting...cross between elliot smith and jeff buckley.
