my band's website

It's a lot better than I was expecting. I'm not sure if it's suitable for a band website though. It looks too clean/good.

Nice layout but I personally didn't like the pastel colors. I know they're universally friendly but I just like zing as long as it doesn't hurt my eyes.

so the worst part of it is it's too clean and/or good and it's universally friendly. ;)

It doesn't quite catch my eye. I have done a ton of site design and I know that the number one thing is to make a lot of sites because everyone you make will make the next better. You really need a color scheme to start that fits your style. From there you need matching fonts, that aren't random. The headlines can be kinda funky but the actual text needs to be very easy to read. As for sidebar, This needs to be interactive and eye popping. Once again fonts are cool, but graphics really are needed here. Last comment. Be creative, dont use templates. Just spend a good few hours imagining what you want, then go to it.

If you need some good stuff to look at I have a site running for my band at http://www.emergencyexitmusic.com and this will soon be changed to this layout: http://s93513100.onlinehome.us/home.htm The links don't quite work yet on the second one.

graphics are exactly the opposite of what I want on my site or want to see on other sites, they should be used sparingly and effectively. interactive and eye popping usually entail flash or animated gifs and these are key elements for BAD web design. these features are annoying and don't work in all browsers. I didn't use a template. I created this from scratch.

what you want is a site that loads quickly and delivers quality content.

you don't see the color scheme?! matching fonts that aren't random? what? did you even look at the site? I don't know how many websites you've designed (doesn't seem like many), but the two you linked are NOT that great (in fact they're pretty bad)... very cluttered and they use FLASH! pro web designers try to stay away from things like that unless their client specifically requests it. on top of that the fonts are terrible. (I can't read a thing on that second website)

Sorry I posted. Just giving my opinion, I'll stay away from you from now on.

I'm not personally trying to attack you, I appreciate the critique. I was just pointing out some good web design tips. The second site (you posted) is much better than the first, but I cannot read below the navigation at all and I recommend staying away from flash to make it compatible with every browser. However, there is a color scheme and the fonts are not random on my site.

what up man?! here are my comments in no particular order...

1. it does seem sort of empty...at least when you get to the main page. you have two busy/full side bars with nothing but 3 tour dates in the main area. seems like maybe you could slap a live photo in there or something to jazz it up. If it were me (and it isn't) i'd put a bunch of your main sections up there...for example...put up an mp3 for them to listen to, next tour date, newest news story...you get the idea...just a thought.

2. everthing looks pretty good once you go to the 2nd level pages. I personally would like to see some more photos or imagery, but that's personal taste

3. as being a guy who designs corporate sites for a living, it does seem a little backwards, with the nav on the right, but this isn't a corporate site, so your good.

4. as mentioned, it's nice and clean which would be nice for a corporate site, but (again) you are not a corporate site. Your music has kind of a gritty bite to it, yet still poppy. I'd like to see that reflected in the design. how? hard to say...but this site does not "look" like your music. it's fine as far as clean sites, but it doesn't "flatter" the music. for example (and i don't mean to bring this up just so you can see our bands wonderfull site), when you look at our site ( http://www.bagoftoysmusic.com ) you kind of get a sense of what our music is saying, and our niche in the "market" or whatever the hell you want to call it.

Just some thoughts....take em or leave em.

good luck!

i would take another look at the sites of emergencyexit they are very good and the kind people expect from a band
no offence but when i looked at your site i thought it was a bad link( site for a office orso)
and the navigation is kinda complicated
But , ok, i used to design pornsites ;)

Robertt8 - that is some great advice. I will take it all in to consideration and probably update the site in about week. Your site looks fabulous by the way. I actually got a good idea from just looking at your site...

werners, I can't really read emergenyexit's sites... so if people are expecting not to be able to find information on my site... sorry... not gonna happen... the fonts and colors on his sites could be selected better (especially the size of the fonts).

i liked robertt8's point about trying to reflect the music in the actual site design... maybe cliches can be good, when it comes to publcising your music! i think people are more likely to carry on looking through your site if they feel they know what music they're Looking at, even if they're not listening to it. maybe there needs to be a stronger sense of creativity (randomness :D) about the site you use for a band - in the same way a computer design company might use much less flamboyant ideas, and go for a more clinical (scientific?) look.

but who knows. i can't imagine there being any real right or wrong answers to this one really.

hope that helps,

Andy

it helps in a sense that I want to let people know straight away what the music sounds like and what it is... it's very important

Ok, first site is being dumped because of the font color issues we are having against the background on the iframes. The second site is flexible to change fonts, but as I said before it is just a template. I really put it up here to show you about how the color and flash fits our music, but since you have problems with flash I guess it was a waste of time. The fonts will be changed, they look different on my computer than on most others since I have tons of hard to get fonts.

Robertt8- You have an amazing site, keep that up!

yeah, to me flash is the devil and I have it disabled (I use Firefox) so that I can click on it if I want to load it on a site. it's like the <blink> tag back in the day... or those annoying animated gifs everyone, or the font comic sans.

I can make flash, but I usually try not to. not everyone has it and I like my websites compatible with every browser (and most of the time you can achieve the same effect without using it). I'm working on my making my sites completely XHTML 1.0 Strict from now on, and if I can't do that at least Transitional.

Flash is great. An ALL flash site is a little freaky sometimes. There's some killer stuff out there. And there a lot of bad Flash work out there.
You site is simple and clean, and looks just fine in Firefox. YES! No bugs that I could see. I listened to your music, I was expecting a nice clean band, and your music is a little "raw-er" than I assumed (in terms of style, not production.)

Maybe use up the space on the left side with a different pix, Use up some of that real estate. Just an opinion. ...and you know opinions are like a*holes, everyone's got one.

btw your 1st picture link doesn't launch http://www.michaelchagnon.com/ev/pictures/ev01jan2005.jpg

nice layout, but the content sounds a little amateurish (like the equipment page... makes it look like a catalog). also, a bit redundant. you can combine the music and discography page and just have mp3's available of some songs from the records. simpler is usually better. color scheme and graphics is totally a matter of taste, so just use what is aesthetically pleasing to you. you did a fine job on the layout and should be proud of your work. nicely done... just maybe rethink the content a bit and not try to include stuff just to fill it up... it ends up looking like you're trying too hard.
best of luck - jv
