My band is trying to get a demo together in the near future. One of our buddies invited us to do some free recordings and so far we did one song to see how it would come out. I was hoping some of you guys could give some feedback on how it came out. It would be cool to let me know what you think of the song too.
thanks a bunch.

Vocal needs to be much more prominent, try compressing, add bit of high mid.

Song, playing and performance sounds good to me. The overall sound however lacks clarity. Did you record live? If not I would go back and treat each part with some/more compression and stick a multiband limiter across the mix.

just my 2 cents:)

Thanks for listening. Ya we recorded live for the first time as a group. Although it made everything go a lot faster I think we would have been better off tracking it out. I also thought it was a little muddy but didn't want to complain to much since we weren't paying ha.

If nothing else, the drums could sound a lot better. If you've got the time and he's got the inclination, definitely keep recording with your friend. Get involved, let him know what you want from the songs, other recordings you like and might be trying to emulate. I doubt you'll get as much attention and creativity from someone you pay for a few hours of studio time as you'll end up getting from him if you guys treat it like the learning process that making music is.
If, on the other hand, he wants to start charging you, or you need something right now, then move on. You could definitely get better quality right away for not too much money.
And the song itself is great. I'd like to hear more.:)

Hey fitz487,
this reminds me of the demo songs of Saosin with Anthony Green, like the vibe!
I would make the drum more punchier and give the kick a bit 4-5K, but very well done!

the cancers - ya that all makes a lot of sense. the guy were doing this with is def in it for the learning experience. he wants to experiment a little more before he starts charging people. thanks for your input.

john dude - i can dig the comment about anthony green. that was the era of saosin i enjoyed. the kick could def use to be a little punchier too. thanks a lot.

if you guys wanna hear more our myspace has some even weaker demos on it. "tibet on horses" is a song i recorded. my first attempt at recording a full band with limited equipment. and there is a live jam up there we did with one mic in the middle of the room.

The performance is fine. The recording quality leaves a lot to be desired. It sounds to me like it's clipping in a few places. Recorded too hot? Also I'd have to agree that the whole track has kind of a muddy sound to it. Not hearing great separation of the instruments. If I were you, I wouldn't pay for this quality of recording/mixing. As long as it's free and you're having fun, keep learning with the fellow.

ya if were gonna start paying this guy i think we would have to look into tracking it out also.
