okay i just brought my avalon m5 used for $960...the problem is i never really worked with preamps before...i connected my avalon m5 to my mackie 1402vlzpro mixer and into my emu 1212m...what do u thinks the best sound i can get out of these?? do you think im able to get "studio" quality??

so whats the filter do? should i use it? whats HI-Z input and filter in..if i should use it...where should i leave it at to get the best sound??

and the microphone +dB where should i leave that at?...whats polarity and pad...whats REV input..??

Honestly, I'm not trying to start anything...

Are you serious?

Hey,

Do you have the user manual? The manual is a good starting point for the different settings and how to connect your preamp. As far as connecting your preamp to the mixer, that is a no no. You really want to go from the preamp directly to your 1212m. I assume you will be recording one track at a time. You will go from your M5 into one, either the left or right input of the sound card. The soundcard outputs should optimally go out to a set of powered monitors or a power amp with passive monitors. Is that a powered mixer?

Your mixer already has built-in preamps, not as nice as your M5, but that mixer is a good part of your recording setup. I recommend using the mixer as a way of monitoring yourself with headphones. The signal should be as follows:

Mic/Guitar/Bass etc.-> Avalon M5 -> E-MU 1212m(L or R input) -> E-MU 1212m L & R outputs -> Mackie Line Inputs -> Headphones (Monitoring)

That is my recommendation. :)

oohh so if i put the avalon m5 directly to my emu 1212 it'll sound better?

Yes. In most cases the shortest signal path is preferred. Just use the Mackie for monitoring. It's really what it's best for.

Do what Rick Shepard said.

And find Avalon's site and download the manual.

this is crazy. that money could house a family for a few months!

And take a basic English course at a community college too! (or at least buy "Home Recording for Dummies")

PS - I just bought a Martin D45, but I don't know how to hold it? Which strings do I hold down to play Green Day's "Time of Your Life" ? :p

Furis, what are you recording, what type of music? Avalon preamps will give you a nice transparent sound if that is what you are looking for, no color to the sound really. The TLM103 I hear is a nice match for it. You have a nice setup there amigo! Make sure you use nice cables like Mogami with neutrik connectors.
