Hello all,

I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with acidplanet.com, but they have some very cool remix contests from time to time. Right now, the Baldwin Brothers (Chicago) have a tune called "Dream Girl" that is presently the subject of the contest.

That's actually my friend Jimmy on the bass, by the way. Anyway, I downloaded the individual tracks (which were zipped and downloaded). From there, I kinda' came up with this funk version. You can also listen to the original at acidplanet.

What encourages me is that I truly believe my remix stands up well to their actual mix, which I'm assuming was professionally done. It's a different spin, for sure. After listening to the other submissions, I am also quite happy that mine competes VERY well in terms of the quality of mixing and "mastering." I hope I don't sound arrogant. What I mean is I've put in a lot of work to improve my mixes, and Im very happy with my progress.

Second song down: Dream Girl. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

hey chessrock,
Im not familiar with the contest of which you speak, or the original tracks that you downloaded. Im just leaving a message to let you know that i enjoyed the way your finished project sounds.......... keep up the good work:D

Thanks! Actually, I was hoping I might try and stir up a little friendly competition. It's a really neat idea, and a very good exercise at the same time. Go to www.acidplanet.com and read up on it. Who here is willing to take me on?

It sounds excellent, in a project studio kind of way.

THe tracking is awesome. THe eq is also nice. DId you do the eq.

I say it sounds project cos it does not have the expensive space of the pros. If you had done the tracking, it would have been excellent.

Its a very balanced mix. You have some tight mixing skills.

that sounds chessy,
he he he man that's super great. I listened 3 times. It's good as far as my ears go.

Alright, Cyan! That's what I like to hear. You need to send an email to the band and tell them if Chessrock does the tracking next time, it will be excellent. :)

Joking aside, I actually have to sort of agree with you. I couldn't believe some of the bleed I heard on a lot of the tracks. Sounded like someone was banging on the kick drum while she was vocal-tracking. Also, the bass and keys they used were exhibiting some nasty hummmmmmmm.

I really appreciate the comments about the eq and mixing. I spent the better part of the entire weekend eq-ing the individual tracks and final mix. We're talking all-night sessions where I went to bed at about 6 am, got up at 10 and dived right back in to it. It feels good to know that my skills are sharpening. I guess like anything else, you have to practice and work hard, and eventually it will pay off.

Sounds good Chessrock....
Vox in particular...
Instrumentation mix is nuts (good)....good levels and balance...
I think it sounds "professionally mixed"...ya know?
The Bass player is one funky son of a bitch...
Just check your fade at the end....maybe stretch it out a bit....
Good job...
Good luck with the contest,
Joe
