and it's all your fault. I tried to play a tape today that I recorded in 1976 so that I could upload it as an analog sample. I broke my back hauling the thing across the room, set it in my custom console (in the picture below), loaded the tape and turned the machine on. No capstan movement (although it does move when spun by hand). No counter lights. One burned out meter light. No response from ANY buttons. WHAT'S the DEAL??? Actually, I'm not surprised as the machined hasn't been played in probably over 10 years. Any suggestions as to the possible cause? Are there any internal fuses???

Yes, there are, IIRC, 7 fuses? Remove the upper rear panel. 4 screws I thin and you'll have access to the fuse PCB. Remember to check them with a continuity tester and not just visually. Look for oxidation too. Sometimes just pulling the fuses and wiping them down firmly and then reinserting can clear up a problem.

I removed all the fuses and reinserted (without wiping down) and, suddenly, I have capstan action. It turns, but nothing else. My multimeter is in worse shape than the tape machine, so further action will have to wait until tomorrow.

I have the damaged 42B here I just got on E-bay, It came with an original manual and extender cards. Let me know If I can help. Buy the way I got $380 of the $382.77 back from an e-bay claim. They have squared me many times that way.

The beauty of the eBay feedback system now is that sellers CANNOT give negative feedback anymore. If you haven't done so, I'd urge you to leave a negative with appropriate comments (without the fear of retribution). It'd help future buyers not to deal with such incompetence. Also, what is the eBay id of this seller?

I'm pleased for you about that Pete. It would have been a bugger to be stuck with a damaged machine and no compensation. I guess you can let the remaining $2.77 slide in this case.

Well it gets better (worse?) They first sent me a BR-20 by mistake, guess what? damaged. So I then spent $120 to send a double box, styrofoam, bubblewrap, tape etc.... to the guy. I also e-mailed step by step instructions and the link to the packing 101 thread here. Well the rest is history. So for 162.77 I have 2 damaged machines. ($40 was the original shipping charge) I dont know what to do with them yet.

Fuses! I think you can get them at most hardware stores. It *has* to be the fuses!

A quick check of the fuses with the meter reveals that they are all ok. The reading was taken across the fuse holders rather than just the fuses o that I am reading through the fuses and their holders.

As for the custom console, I'm well known for the quality custom consoles that I build for my tape machines. You can see two more of them in the bottom picture below. These were several years older though. The one with my 42B on it is a much more modern version.
