I'm looking at the Marshall MXLV69 and the MXLV77. Anyone compared the two against each other? I currently owne the 69...real nice mic for the price...just trying to figure out what the extra $100 brings to the table.

I'm looking for a nice warm mic for some vocals and acoustic guitar.

I own the V77. I haven't heard the 69, but based on other's opinions, I believe the V77 is less colored that the 69, prolly more on the "detail" side. It is a very sensitive mic. When I just got it, I didn't like it that much, I was expecting something more on the line of the 69. Now, I ended up loving it. I've had some very nice sounds with it on any sources but very dynamic singers, due to its somewhat low max spl rating. It works very good as an ambience mic too.
Words to describe it if it helps....smooth and detailed, even so for a chineese.
I think Mr Harvey likes this one too. Maybe you ought to contact him as I believe he owns both and he might have a more valuable opinion that mine, based on his experience.

I have them both and indeed the V77 is more neutral sounding than the V69, both are nice mics. The 77 comes closer to the expensive German sound.

IMHO the 77 looks better as well, the 69 looks like Britney:D

I have the V77 as well. Han, do you think they are different enough to warrant owning both? (I have a V67 that I would sell if I bought the V69)..

Yep, the 69 and 77 are different sounding. The 69 is also different from the 67 as I've learned from the RO forums.
A guy who owns them both didn't like the 67 very much, but was very happy with the 69.

I have used the 69 on bariton sax in a bigband recording and it sounded very good. It was close to perfect on an upright bass and many vocalists will like this mic.

The 77 otoh is a wonderful sounding mic that comes really close to my Neumann M149. It sounds a tad brighter, but really close to the expensive German sound. I think almost everything will sound good with this mic.

IMHO the 77 is more versatile than the 69, so owning them both will do you no harm.

Excellent. I will consider that. Thanks.

Anyone else have thoughts on the V69 specifically? I find it intriguing that folks think it's colored, some say dark, but it doesn't fully utilize the tube and it's transformerless.

Han,

Which would you say is the "warmer" mic...the 69 or the 77?

Thanks

To be honest, I haven't used them very much because I have many mics (sorry) and I use the M149 on vocals most of the time.

The V69 has a bigger bottom end and quite an amount of proximity. So you might translate that to 'warmth'.
It has a nice high end as well, actually it's a mic that sounds pretty good on most vocals.

But for instrumental recording I would prefer the V77, which did a very good job on alto sax, clarinet, acoustic guitar grand piano and some vocals so far.

A Neumann outperforms both of them but hey, you can buy at least 15 V69's for the price of a M149.:D

Thanks Han,

Like I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I'm looking at the differences between the 69 and the 77...I really like my 69 but like you mentioned, the proximity is "there" and the bottom end is a little round. I'm trying to pick up a second tube mic to round out my vocals selection and one which will still work nicely for acoustic guitars.

Its just a bummer not being able to try the 77 for myself. I think I'll just have to jump into the deep end go with the 77. You and many others seem to like the 77. Many have said that the 77 seems to be a little more accurate which sounds like a good choice for instrumental work.

Thanks all.

Looks cheap, but high maintenance?

:D

Is the 69 a good choice for a good color contrast with a bright/neutral mic, such as my AT4040?
