GUITARDAZE
Thinking about taking the plung, and buying a tube mic. I was just wondering if you guys(those who own or have used at least two of the said mics)had any sugestions on which one I should go with. I'm looking for something that really makes my vocals sound warm with-out it being to over bearing. I am mostly doing acoustic, type rock. My vocals are more raw and soulfull. I allready own a SP C1 and a Rode NT1, but I want a really good mic that I can use to make my vocal tracks sound a lot better. I keep hearing great things about the MXL V69, and what a great tube sound it has, but I would like some real feed back, maybe even some mp3's of stuff you guys have done with one of these mics.

Thanks, Rich

I guess I should mention that I am running these through a joemeek, and a VTB1

Is that mp3 related to the thread? It sounds great, I love the sound of it actually. Sorry how did you do the drums? Sorry :)

The mp3 is just to give and Idea of what my vocals sound like, so that those listening can tell what kind of mic sound I should be after.

The drums on that tune are drum loops. :) very nice sounding ones.

Twice I've been fooled in two days. Oh dear, I'm starting to lose my hearing

I've played with the Groove Tubes and the NTK before. In my opinion, the GT is a little more forward and midrangy . . . kind of a rocker's mic. Not quite as much air or proximity effect as something like an NTK. Your vocals sound a little more on the breathy side, so my stab in the dark is you might like the NTK a little better -- it's got that breathy sheen and some flattering proximity effect you might get in to. No idea about the v69, but I don't particularly like any of the Marshall LDC's, so I'd be hesitant to go there, but who knows?

They're all decent mics. I'd buy all three and return the two I didn't like. :D

Checkout the Oktava MKL2500. Forget what you hear and forget recommendations good or bad. Just try one out if possible. You might be really surprised, you might not. GC might still have them on sale.

Hmmm. . . seems like a good pre might do the job better.

For $500

RNP
Toft AFC-2
Sytek 4 Channel (if you luck out)
Grace 101

Maybe you should just track with a compressor on 2:1 or something? That would allow you to get up closer on the mic for some more air. Air is going to come from more higher harmonics, which could be more easily achieved with a pre-amp upgrade. The C-1 should suit you fine I would think.

If you are still bent on a tube mic, I say go for the V-69. Get it from a place with a good return policy and ship it back if it doesn't work out. Otherwise sell it for a $50 - $75 loss and start over again.

BTW, your tracks already sound pretty damn good.

Thanks for the info guys, I am going to go to GC and see what I can test out or at least try out for thirty days. That is probably the only way I will really know. I have been told several times, that I may just want to upgrade to a better pre amp, that my mics should do the job.

You might also want to check out the CAD M9. 8th Street is selling them for $295. IMO, it's a pretty sweet mic on male vocals.

Also you might want to take a listen to the MXL V77S. There aren't a lot of reviews on this one, but it's what I use in my studio to record vocals. I prefer it to the 69M, and it uses the same tube as the AKG C12. They typically run about $350 at most places that carry them.

Actually I did a blind 'taste test' at the Tommy Tedesco Studio in L.A. with a couple classes of engineering students and teachers where had one of the students sing into a bunch of mics, including a Neumann U87, Akg 414 etc... and the V77S, recorded them into pro-tools and mixed up the tracks and played them back so that nobody knew which mic was which, and the majority of the students preferred the V77S over the rest of the mics... the teachers were so impressed with it they bought two for the studio.

Very Cool, I will have to check that one out as well.
