MXL v69 and noise

I just bought a new MXL v69 M. My first tube mic.
I notice that the noise floor is not so low.
I hear (in a quiet room) a low fluctuating rumble kind of sound.(And it's not air, refrigerators, cars or anything like that.)
It moves my VU's as well.


Question: Is this normal for the v69?
 
It might be the tube.

Now the thing with the 12at7 type v69 is the tube is just inside it to be called a tube microphone as best I can tell. I have two v69ms

The tube has a feedback network that if I did the math right and traced that section right should be about a gain of -1.

Reseat the stock tube and/or drop a good NOS 12at7 or 12ay7(6072a) it should not matter much what tube to check if the rumble is coming from the tube, The tube would be my first guess.
 
It's not the tube.

It seems more like a ground problem in the tube socket.
I get allot of static/pops as well as drop offs when the rubber around the tube socket is touched (even lightly).

No micro-phonics on the tube either.

Something else that I noticed is that my preamp levels, while recording the same instrument-at different times, will change as well.
(ie. sometimes my preamp will be @ +3 at other times it will be as high as +9.
Same song - same instrument - same artist - different time.)

I'm thinking about exchanging it before it's too late. :confused:
 
Exchange it now........go with a different mic completely. I had an MXL V69 and it had a similar problem. I got major static everytime I tried to use it. I finally sent it to MXL for repair. I sent the mic, the cords, the converter box, everything. They said it was unfixable so they sent a "brand new" mic for the max repair charge of $100. 3 weeks later it had the same problem. They have terrible customer service, never responding to email, and "Rob" is always out (The repair guy apparently).
 
I had a V69 that had the exact same problem. I called Marshall and they said since I didn't have a receipt the were going to charge the fee and basically send me a new mic. I decided to see if I could solve the problem myself.

I changed the tube, every capacitor, resistor and FET in the damn thing and it still made the rumble.

There is a small mystery IC chip in the mic and that turned out to be the only thing I didn't change. I would bet you're going through the same thing.

I ended up putting a whole different circuit in it!

I'm exchanging it.

I liked the "sound" of the mic except for the obvious problem.

I wouldn't mind getting another one if it worked correctly.

Does anyone have success story's with this mic?
 
I have the Mogami Edition and I really like it. It's not overly bright, and it seems very smooth to me.
 
Not much of a story here for ya, but I like mine. For my wifes vocals, it goes shiny box 23 then V69 for popularity on most songs. But if I want a little more sheen as they say, I reach for the V69. I think Harvey Gerst and a few others have given plenty of examples of the V69 on lead vocals, all of which sounded great.
