MXL to do all my vocals...

Hi guys... I´m a drummer, and i record most of the time instrumental music (from jazz to rock)...
Now and then, a friend comes to say hi and i would like to have a mic to use on vocals... Something cheap (under $100) but nice, and able to fit different voices... (The pres that i use are from my Firepod)

I spend quality time reading some reviews and i have 3 models in mind...

MXL 990
MXL V67G
SP B1

Which one would be usuable on different styles (not heavy metal or something like that... Think from Jazz to Grunge)?
Any other model that i should look?

I have a SM57 and i tried it on vocals... it works but i think that a condenser would be a nice addition to my (tiny tiny) mic collection.
 
i like the mxl v63m mogami edition

it was less $ than the v67g which i also have

its more natural as opposed to fizzy for the v67g

the fizziness might work sometime when i need the extra jizz to cut thru a mix but i like a warm natural sound
 
If you want versitile, the SP B1 is the way to go. It's pretty neutral without alot of color, which you can always add later if needed. I have a pair and they also make great drum overheads.

They may not be "perfect" in every situation, but they won't be very far off either. At least from my experience with them.

In reading lots of these threads in the past, the Studio Projects mics seem to be a bit better sounding overall. The B1 gets good reviews - if any mic gets picked, I would skip the 990 - its okay, but you can do better for the money.

The V67, on the other hand, gets some good press around here for vocals, especially considering the price. Search the mic forum title-only for it, you'll get some good info and honest reviews.

I have a couple of the V67's and I like them a lot. They fit my voice very well and they're freakin' GREAT for sax.
However, I haven't used the B1 and almost every review of them I've read has been pretty positive.

I HAD to include to 990 on the list after hearing Harvey´s great results using it on vocals... Still thinking about it...
 
I used a V67g for a long time - but having just tried an RE-20 I'm really really impressed. It absolutely sounds good on just about everything I point it at.

You can check them both out if you follow my sig.

A Measure of Salt is the RE-20 - on every vocal track. There's a few..;)

Well, I will say that I also have the V67G and have used it quite a bit with great results. I used it to record all the vocal tracks on the King Mixer CD.

I've also been using the v67g recently and it sounds better than my old gt57 on nearly every vocalist I'm using it on. Good upfront sound without all the sizzle I generally get with other cheaper mics(including the gt57).
 
you can get a 990 off musiciansfriend.com right now for like 50$s
 
i've got a B1 and a V67. while the B1 is a good all arounder for instruments and such, it's about the last mic i'd pic for lead vocals. the 67 beats it easily about 98% of the time for lead vocals. plus, for some reason or another, people get excited about the green and gold color scheme and excited vocalists almost always produce better sounding tracks.

but you'll need to audition a lot of mics before you find one that works best for you. and even if you find one that works great on one song, there's no guarantee that i'll work great on another song. i've got 5 mics that i regularly use on my vocals, two of which are the MXL V67 and V77.

Reminds me of the thread where a member of some high school band posted asking what the Avalon preamp they bought was for. Buh-mazing.

Hmm... I wonder which would sound better overall on the same vocal source: MXL 990 + Avalon/Neve/etc preamp, or Vintage, mint condition U47 + Behri Tube Ultragain Pre :D For the sake of quality comparison, run em through top-quality converters, as it isn't part of my theoretical experiment :p

The U47. The MXL will still sound harsh on some sources even when heard through a Avalon, while the U47 would probably sound okay through the Behri as long as you have the tube turned all the way down, I would think. Maybe a little noisy....
