how bad is this mic? Is it even worth buying. Its really cheap, and mxl mics seemed to be pretty highly regarded as 'bang for the buck' mics. Is it at all worth it, or should i just wait a little until i can get v63 or something? I dont need a great quality mic, so im wondering if there is a big difference in these two. Plus, i dont have any source of income and community service is taking up alot of time i could be using for random jobs to make some money.

Sure, the 990 is a cool little mic. And for $59.99 including case and an excellent shockmount, it's the way to go in that price range. Very nice total package for that kind of money. The 990 might look like a large condenser, but it's actually a small condenser mic - with a 20mm (3/4") diaphragm. It works fine and is a decent mic. Not shitty at all.

But I'd recommend just getting the 990, and not going for one of those 990/991 combo packages.

Totally a bang for your buck mic. I have a couple. I've gotten pretty good results on acoustic guitar. They are also totally respectable for some voices. Nice on clean electric guitar, as well.

I've also posted these in the Mixing Clinic for feedback, but here are some of the preliminary results with a combo setup:

It is a single track using a Sennheiser e609 and MXL990 up close. The first clip is raw, the second has some EQing, compression 1.7:1 and some pre-delay on the left channel.

Raw track:

Mixed track:

However, if you use the MXL990 only by itself, then accoustic guitar and vocals are your target.

As Dot mentioned, I purchased the 990/991 combo, and I don't use the 991 anymore. But the 991 would probably make a nice ambeince mic.

I concur. These things are totally worthwhile, and a steal for the price.

I put my 990 on a guitar amp once and when i went back and listened to the track...it sounded like it twisted the diaphram into a big ball....terrible distortion...I have used it sucessfully on accoustic and some vocals though...

I have been thinking about selling it in the forums here...maybe someone would be interrested...ill have to think about it a little more...

would this bad daddy work on overheads until i get a better mic to record them with? And hey, thajeremy, do you have the shockmount with it? I can give you around $45 for the mic if you do.

i like the mxl990 much on my acoustic guitar, and it sounds ok w/ vocals too

Although I haven't tried it on overheads myself, I imagine it would do nicely. It apparently has the same 20mm capsule as the much-liked MXL 603s.

If you havnt replied by monday, Ill probably list it in the ads part of the board.

I have to chime in here. I have the 990 and don't think that it is a very good vocal mic. I prefer the 57 on most voices -- the 990 has a weird resonant quality that I dislike. That said, it is my only condenser, so I do use it quite often. But I prefer the SP B1.
