MXL 603s

I received a pair of these two days ago. I bought them for drum overheads but tried something else first. I used these on a Martin D35 which is quite boomy to begin with. I rolled of some low end and used the bass roll off on the board. Pretty neat for not much money. The only problem I noted was the incredibly cheezy supplied windscreen... but hey, they sound great.

How much of a problem do you have with wind where you record?

The only "wind" problem I have around here is flatulent pedal steelers

A Martin dreadnaught is a boomy beast. That deep, resonate bass that sounds so great live can be very difficult to record. Back the mics up some and keep them away from the sound hole. These mics have a wide cardoid pattern.

Ill tend to use the tried XY at the 12th fret.

Kind of like the diagram with the forward and back slash being the mics and the 12th fret being where two dots go on some guitars.

You guys aren't kidding. I'm recording a Martin beasty with 603's as we speak and it was a devil trying to get enough of the bass out and have it still sound good. I did the ol' 12th fret deal and realized I was getting a bit too much string buzz.

When I told the guitarist, he listened and backed off on whacking the strings.

Perfect. I really like these little mics. They work really well for the guitar. When I have the monitors up I feel like I'm sitting inside the guitar.
