I was looking into the MXL 603s's, and see where new they are like 89 bucks, but a matched pair is like 270.00

Could one get by just buying 2 "un-matched" ones, or does this present a problem of some sort? If there would be a problem, could someone expain this?

Thanks,
Rick

Usually two mics of the same model that aren't matched are gonna be close enough to each other in response to use as a pair.

For the matched set, you also get shock mounts and a "flight case."

you can get by...just modify the eq so they sound alike

Man that's a good price!!......and a shinny case to boot! :)

I was thinking of using these for Drum over heads and acoustic guitar...... Anything look wrong with this decision?

Thanks agian!!

I got the matched set w/ shockmount and case from ebay seller ar-online for 210, w/ two tripod mic stands. It was a good deal even if they weren't matched. Good support after the sale too, I had a dud and they replaced it.

lol yeah close enough...i have a stereo pair...not a matched pair...my acoustic guitar sounds just fine....the mics are pretty sensitive to me though...

nope...thats what i use them for

I just called them and they said that they can "match" them for $25.00 extra.

Would this be the same as the actual Matched sets you would buy for 170, or would they just be a bit closer than two individual random mics?

they'll probably be hand matched...translation being " hey ed, plug that in...does it sound good to you? aight sounds good to me...they're matched"

Yeah, that's what I figured... It's a "technical term" :)

I got a little certificate in my flight case that said "Factory Matched" but no plots, so whatever that means. They probably just pull off two consecutive mics and package them.
FWIW, the first pair I got was not very closely matched, but as I said, one quickly developed a noise problem so it might of been damaged to begin with. The replacement pair was very closely matched in terms of sound, but one was definitely louder.
I have since mod'ed the mics with better capacitors and replaced a zener diode to get higher voltage on the capsule. They sound better, although not as closely matched anymore. It hasn't really gotten in the way though, they're still close enough for what I do.

There are much better options out there than MXL 603's for drum OH & acoustic guitar. If you're on a very tight budget though they'll get you by.

For the price they're pretty damn good, especially on AC guitar. If you are handy with a soldering iron, swapping out the in-line AC coupling capacitors for better ones make them really good.

What would some of the "Much Better Options" be??.......

In the $200.00 and under catagory....of course. :)

Thanks!!!

Rick

Under $200; I can't answer that. I'd save up for two AKG C414's.
