Im going to be getting a pair of overhead mics, and I was wondering which were better, the MXL 603's or the MXL 993's. I am open to suggestions for other mics. though. I would prefer to stay under 150, but would possibly go as high as 200 for a pair.

Oh, and i was wondering if a shockmount is nessecary for drum overhead mics?

I've only used 603s, which I really like on drum overheads. They don't sound fantastic, and I think that Oktava MC (MK) 012's sound better... the 603s tend towards bright. But they really do sound quite good. I haven't heard the 993's and I'm not sure if there is all that much difference, though for all I know they could be completely different.

I don't use shockmounts on my mics, though I probably would if I had them... my overheads are so high above the drums I can't really see an issue there...

I asked a similar question..well just if the 993s were good...someone suggested 2 AUdix f15s, and i checked them out here:

go to jam sessions, and you can check out various mics as overheads. I did like the F15 mics, which u can get on zzsounds for 80 each..i believe.

Don't you hate it when you ask a simple question, and people can't stick to the constraints of the question? Me too.

BTW, I love the Oktava MK012's for overheads, and practically anything with strings. :D
