I know a few of you have tried both and I'm looking at doing a 2001 royer mod. Just trying to get some opinions on the best bang for buck choice. PhilGood was kind enough to send me the royer .pdf and I'm pretty sure that this is the way I want to go but....... I was diggin around and found all the posts about the Apex/Nady and how the 6072 is a good improvement over the stock tube. One of my concerns with the 2001 is if the harshness is cured by the royer mod. On the other hand, I saw alot of folks mentioning that the Apex sounds a little weird in the hi's and lo's even after the tube change. I do realize that the capsule could be upgraded on down the road in either mic.

If you could only do one at the moment, which would you choose?

...no contest...the Royer is the way to go, but you should know that although the original mic used for the tube mod was the 2001, David Royer later chose ADK (Vienna 5-micron capsule) for his mod...now the Mojave MA-200 uses a 3-micron capsule...
...I would send an email to Mojave and ask John which mic David would recommend for the mod, the 2001 or the ADK A51 (many others like Philgood chose the MXL V67 for the mod as well)...I believe that many of the ADK mics are made by 797Audio, who make some of the better of the Chinese diaphragms...you can also email Larry at ADK and see which of his mics he would recommend...the capsule is crucial to the mod...I have 2 Royer modded mics...one with the 2001 capsule and one with the ADK Vienna capsule...the ADK modded mic has a slightly fuller and more smooth character, although either mic is a big improvement on the typical Chinese LD condenser...good luck!...

If you're willing to spend an additional $99, you could do the royer mod in an M-Audio Nova and would be almost identical to the MA-200. It has the 797 capsule and is the same body. The MA-200 has rave reviews.

As cheap as the MXL 2001/603s pack is, I think I'm going to go with it. I might grab that ADK or M-Audio at a later date and give it a try too. Thanks for the suggestions fellas.
