Hi all!
I have a newbie question about muting strings.
I'm trying to record a bass line 120 BPM, and there are some parts with staccato of eight notes, of 1/8th ? measure. The question is -- would you try to mute every note with your left hand, or just let it sound as is (assuming playing finger style). And it's a punk/post-punk style, clean bass, with distorted guitar.
I don't know if I explain it clear enough.
Probably some would say -- "whatever sounds good for YOUR ears..." But what would you do?
Thanks for your help!

It would depend on what else is happening and what works. The drummer I record with most plays double bass and we are constantly playing against each other to create dynamics. If he is pumping 8ths then I will be playing punches and the other way around, on occasion we do play straight 8ths then I will be dampening some notes ala Rocco Prestia just to make it funky perhaps adding octaves or playing something melodic or leading.

Thanks Bassbrad for your reply. So basically what you are saying is -- use your ears, and be more creative... I guess that's a best approach. Thanks again!

If you're playing anything ala Rocco, you have my deepest respect.
