I posted this earlier in the GB thread. Here are sound clips of the GB mics I bought along with a few other DIY and Naiant mics in my collection. It was recorded at my friend's home studio. I played a simple chord progression on a tenor ukulele while my friend recorded. The mic placement was about 10 inches away from the ukulele's sound hole, straight on. The mics went through my Massenburg 8304 mic pre into Digital Performer running on a Mac.

VERY cool... thanks!

Wow Antichef!! The difference between the amp model and the marshall is insane! Sounding really good!

Thanks for the trumpet clip too!

Thanks to everyone who's contributing to this - keeps getting me more excited about these mics!:D

Does any one have any comments on using any of these mics in omni mode (particularly as stereo pair room mics)? Haven't heard much comment on that application.

ACM-3 Sound Sample

I really can't do a review of the ACM-3 as I've only recorded with it 1 time, tonight.

I didn't get in on the last group buy so I didn't get this mic from there. A guy over on another board, who did get this mic in the last group buy, didn't want it anymore due to the sagging ribbon, and said that if anyone would pay shipping on it, he'd send it to them... I took him up on this offer and he graciously sent it to me...

I only did this sound sample to make sure the microphone actually worked after I retensioned the ribbon it myself. I didn't use any special tools to do it, just "eye-balled" it...

Again, this is a one-take recording, originally only meant for myself to hear the mic, but thought I'd post it here as well...

I played a stock groove from a Roland G-1000 and had a friend play his guitar along, while I miced the amp...it was that simple... No plugin effects...etc. What you hear is what was recorded.

Here was my setup:

Roland G-1000: Direct --> Mackie 32:8 --> Alesis ADAT --> Lightpipe out --> Digi001

Guitar: John Mayer Edition Stratocaster --> Vintage Fender Twin Reverb Amp --> ACM-3 Microphone --> Mackie 32:8 --> Alesis ADAT --> Lightpipe out --> Digi001

Again, this is a "rough" recording, one-taker, no edits, only improvising around a chord pattern... Even at one point, about 20 seconds into the sample, you can hear talking in the background... :o Someone asking me, "Who did you play the fiddle with tonight...", as I'm a fiddler and had just came in from a gig...

At any rate, here it is: TnC ACM-3 Microphone Sample

All-in-all, I was happy with the sound of the microphone tonight... It was definately worth the cost of shipping to me! Thanks again to the guy who sent it, you know who you are...

I have tried my ACM-4 on vocals, acoustic guitar ...
Overall the sound is somewhat dark and has an old-timey vibe on some material. While not my first pick for vocals I do find it very useful and plan to hold onto mine.

agreed. I'm using my motu preamps. I'm guess I'd get a better vocal sound with better pres. The sound is definitely old-timey.

Part of that could be ribbon tension. Part of it is probably the transformer. Whether to mod or not depends on what you're going for. That's the one thing I like about my Nady RSM-2 (massive beast) is that it has room for two transformers and a switch. :D

You don't have any pictures of that mod do you? I've got a similar opportunity with the ACM-1.

Beyond that, though, the heavy guitar sounds with the ACM-2 aren't too dark are they?

Sounds awesome! There are some **REALLY** bassy bits in it mind, which may conflict when the bass comes in, but honestly I'm hugely impressed with that. The amp model part sounds like you're playing through a hifi with torn speakers or something:D The rest of it is very nice though:D

Will be nice to hear the finished mix!
