Every stinkin' time I have tried to test an amp, pedal, drums or whatever, I always get one of the clerks hovering over me, and it makes me uncomfortable. Also, when I test an amp I like to get it to at least 75% volume to see what she sounds like, and I either I am told to turn it down or the sales person will run over and turn it down. How do they sell merchadise like that? What should I say to them? What is a reasonable amount of time to have it up loud?

That's usually hard in most stores. Some GC stores have an amp room that makes testing somewhat easier. Most smaller stores do not, and loud volume causes them obvious problems.

Best approach is to find someone who already has one and try theirs out. That way you avoid both the saleman and volume issues.

It's just so stupid, I mean who wants to buy a new mustang or corvette without opening it up a little,

However when you try out the car, it's on the open road and not in the showroom.

Some offer a rental approach where you can rent a piece of gear for a day or two and take it home. Then you get to really try it out. We do that here with a local music store.

gc lets you take shit home for 30 days i think. The only "music store" in town is a fucking joke here. If you pick up an instrument the dirt bag at the counter is like "these instruments are for selling not for playing"...no joke at all. And the guys who give lessons just sit there and talk shit about you the whole time (thats just what i heard seeing as i dont take lessons) Its a terrible place...terrible, terrible place.

Trying out gear in a GC is a fruitless labor. The constant din in that place makes it absolutely impossible. Every time I walk in to one, the noise is so out of control I can hardly stand to be in there. I can't imagine working there for 8 hours a day....

I have yet to test drive a performance car without the owner or salesman being included in the drive. They're not big on you "opening up" a car you don't own, either.

I could not agree more. The reason that happens is because EVERYONE wants to crank. Kids go there just to make noise. You can't tell me that everyone in GC wanking off is there testing something they want to buy. I hate that place.
I can't stand to be in there. They are a good store as far as gear goes, but if I need to test equipment, I need to be louder than the next guy and that means I can't REALLY test anything. It sucks.

There is a good reason a lot of stores don't want you to walk in there and crank an amp to 10. It pisses off every other customer in the place. Have some decency and go there when you know it is not peak hours. Like first thing in the morning. How hard can that be?
