Music is a cruel mistress

I have a friend in band which is very successful right now by any measure.

They've been touring on a global scale with very powerful people behind them and, as far as I know, turned their first profit this year....
Year five!

.
yep.

Some good friends of mine were Louisiana's LaRoux.
They had a number one song, several well received albums and toured incessantly.

After it was all over they were all in debt to the record companies.

You hear so many stories about that kind of thing.
I was talking with a pal recently about how, pretty much, all our favourite artists found themselves up shit creek at least once in their careers.

I am fairly fresh to the whole thing but I can't help but feel that if someone wants to make money from original music they have to either
  • gain the popularity to generate royalties from airplay (which is tough the way stations are grouped and play listed these days)
  • license their songs for sync
  • or sell/license their songs to for 'pop stars' to sing.

If someone can dedicate half of their time to making great music and the other half to finding a great publisher, there might be half a glimmer of hope, in my opinion.

My bands split local gigs with touring bands all the time. I know they make no money because I ask them. I see them get paid when we get paid. Many times, my stupid bands make more than they do. WTF sense does that make? Their reason for touring is because they think that's what they're supposed to do. They don't care that they're hemorrhaging money because they're living the rock and roll lifestyle of cramming 5 sweaty grimy losers into a van and sleeping on generous people's floors. Success! These same bands don't exist a year later. We had one touring band literally quit the gig and leave before they had to play because we wouldn't give them our better time slot. Big money to be made like that.

That's where my cynicism comes from. It comes from reality. Seeking out on your own "on tour" is retarded. The only way it can even come close to being financially successful is if someone else is fronting all of the money because simple logistical expenses will eat up the profits fast for an original material band.

And not to mention that people just don't fucking care about original DIY live music.

I have a nephew, same thing with a group called Days of the New, several CDs, platinum sales, decent following, therefore he gets decent money per gig, but after the expenses and paying everyone (band, booking agent, manager), there is very little money left for the effort. Gigs are more or less break even, merchandise you could possible make money and that is a good time to sell new material. For older groups who do have a following, the casino circuit is turning out to be pretty nice. They now have the festivals in the summer and Casinos in the winter.

So, it is getting better for established groups with a following, but for any up and comers, I don't see how it can work. Pure love and adventure more than anything.

I never really cared about making it. Not that we don't all day dream lol. Everyone I know personally who had any success doesn't have shit to show for it. You have to be a monster hit machine to make money and even if you wrote the best song in the world that doesn't mean it'll be a hit lol. And I take the stance that if I had a hit song I would be a little embarrassed that the masses of idiots in the world actually liked my music. I would ask myself do I really suck that bad? Am I so limited on inspiration that my music has become simple minded junk food for all the mindless zombies of the world?

no ..... it pays my bills and my mortgage.

Word brother, but for me it's a fun hobby and is like free therapy :p

Video games suck. It blows my mind that people spend so much time and energy on that shit.

Video games do not suck. I admit that some are really boring while others are complex and dynamic. I started playing GTAV on PS3 and was never a console gamer, but it's grown on me quite a bit. It was really hard at first and in time I got A LOT better at it. They even have ingenious video games like Rock Smith that comes with a guitar cable that you can plug your guitar into and learn a shit load of songs in every style of music.

In one study they found that video games could cure depression better than counseling. :thumbs up:

Are you fucking kidding me? Seriously? I know you're woefully stuck in the stone ages, but come on dude.

I'm talking about for the millions of nobodies out there. The garage bands that can't even generate a local following that think going "on tour" is a good idea. There is no money in that, and it will cost way more than they can make.

Sorry, I missed the part in your post where you said 'except for the pros'. Don't think anyone tours to play cover songs at bars around the country/region any more, because that never really paid the bills.

once again, no ..... it used to pay fairly well ....... it just doesn't anymore and hasn't for a couple decades but it used to.

there are quite a few games that interest me but to really get into them takes a lotta time and I don't have it so I stay away!

I didn't think I had to go full crayon mode for you to understand this. I'm not talking about a touring cover band either. But whatever. You're clearly out of touch with reality.

Yeah it's not something you want to be obsessed about. It's more of a piddle around when you're bored out of you mind and don't feel like doing anything else.

some of 'em look cool as hell to me! Especially some of the role playing games with thousands of members.

Maybe when I'm in a wheelchair.

:)

Video games are the culmination of every known artistic discipline. Some are boring, but some have a really interesting visual and/or auditory style. For example: The Bioshock series are fantastic in that way: Especially Bioshock Infinite. (The Elder Scrolls games are also great for that) Some people take them far too seriously, but there are some games that are every bit as much of a work of art as a great film or a great album (just a different artistic medium).
