Hi, what exactally are music charts and how do they work ? what determines where an artist is placed ? WHere can I find out the history on them and what the major ones are ?

Are you taking about RIAA and Billboard? They are based on CD sales and commercial radio airplay. I'm sure RIAA has a website.

so what are you wondering? RIAA tracks CD sales by the barcode a new record is assigned. The distributor is supposed to send info on sales, and RIAA keeps track.
Billboard is a combination of how many CD's sold + # of times the song is played on radio, which I believe is tracked through royalty org's. Someone may correct me if I'm wrong, but I think thats about it.
