Multitracks/stand alone

I was trying to decide between the Yamaha and Fostex when I came across this thread...great stuff.

Ok, way back in this thread someone mentioned that the Yamaha recorded in 4 stereo pairs, while the Fostex uses mono tracks. Can someone explain what this means and how it's a liability? I basically just need to record 8 track simultaneously, and be able to mess around with those 8 individual tracks.

Someone also said the drives on the Fostex are more easily swappable. How does the Yamaha compare?

thx

tvanveen - whoever said the Yammie records in 4 stereo pairs was misinformed. 8 of its 16 tracks are stereo pairs, but the first 8 are straight mono and it will do what you want (so will the Fostex).

Fostex currently uses 40gig Maxtor drives in the VF160, though there are several brands/sizes that will work... So, in the event you need a new drive, you should have no problems getting a compatible one, even up to 80gig. From other's experiences, it's pretty much badda-boom,badda-bing.
