Hi everyone, i'm relatively new to home recording. I have Cubase SX3, and a Phonic HelixBoard 18 Firewire MK2 running on Windows XP.

Everything seems to be running fine except the multitracking.

If i am recording my drums (8 inputs) and i have 8 tracks up, does Cubase just automatically assign an input to a track? If so how do i find out which drum is going through which track?

If not, how do i assign a track to a particular input because i've gone to Devices VST and it can't be done there.

Thanks alot

James

click the little "e" symbol for the track

then, above the fader, you'll see a little black box that shows both the input and output for that channel...select the channel you want to be the input, and what you want to be the output

They thanks for the quick reply. I've tried this and it only has left or right to choose from.

I'm getting really frustrated with it because i can't assign my inputs to each track, and also, the sound is really quiet.

I've turned the gain right up and its still really quiet.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I have SE3, not sure how different it is from SX3.

I'm not crazy with the way Cubase names the channels... maybe I'm doing something wrong... but it groups them as pairs. But that's easy to work around. When you go back to the channel to select the input, just select the bus that corresponds to the input you want, Left will be the odd number channel of the pair, Right will be the even.

If you only have two channels total, then you need to add more to your bus. In VST Connections, click Add Bus and increase the count to whatever you need. Choose Stereo. You'll see what channel comes in with what name. Like I said, Cubase pairs them up, but you can still keep your track mono, just select Left or Right for wahtever bus you want when you create your track.

For volume, sounds like a gain staging issue. Set the correct levels at the trim knobs on the mixer. The faders on the mixer and the faders in Cubase won't help you when you're tracking. Actually, the faders on the mixer are out of the loop completely when the signal goes to Cubase.

Does this help??

Cheers,

Yes thanks so much. I knew it was something small. My setup sounds absolutely amazing now.

Cheers
