Hello,

New to the site.

I have a Korg X5 synthesizer and a Korg S3 rhythm workstation. I wish to Midi the two together and use the S3 as a multitrack sequencer. I have the Midi out of the X5 to the Midi in of the S3 and vice versa.

My problem is that I can record the drums (or any other sound) on the X5 to the S3 but when I go to use a separate track on the S3 and change programs on the X5, my drum track changes to the new X5 program (piano, marimba, whatever). So I end up with a bunch of the same sound instead of drums, keys, bass etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing you have to disengage the MIDI receive on whatever MIDI channel you are assigning the drums to (normally it is standard to use MIDI channel 10 for drums).

Another possibility is the X5 may have a MIDI send parameter while sends patch change information - so it is telling the S3 to change patch.

I'm not specifically versed with those Korg devices - but I'm relatively sure it has something to do with MIDI send on the X5 and/or MIDI receive on the S3

I'd make it easy on yourself and pick up a dedicated hardware sequencer with a more friendly interface and just use the S3 as a module.

Turns out that I was overlooking a submenu on the X5 keyboard that allows me to assign different programs to different midi tracks. Thanks xdrummer for your insight.
