Multimix 12 firewire problem!

I have a multimix 12 firewire running with the latest vista drivers on vista home premium 32. It all works fine but every so often at random times, vista thinks all is OK with the sound but when I play any sound from any program including the sound control panel in vista, nothing comes out of the alesis. I have to power off the alesis, wait until vista says there is no sound card, then turn it back on and it works again for a while.. I just was using it about an hour ago and now no sound comes out but vista thinks its there...

I have tried all kinds of latency settings and safe mode settings and nothing seems to solve the issue.. what is causing this and how do I resolve??

I read through it but it doesnt solve my issue.. if I am just using it a a windows sound card not using any recording software it does what I described which is what the person in the thread you pointed me to has also (although his thread mentions recording software)..any ideas what I can try to resolve this? The thread also mentions laptops and I am on a desktop ... they talk about laptop cards.. I have tried 2 different cards.. one is built into my motherboard and the other is a card I put in one of the PCI slots...
