MultiEffects pedal recommendation?

Check out the Rocktron Prophesy - you will need a midi floor pedal to go with it (its double rack unit). I got a Prophesy II recently and have dropped all of my other gear, traded up from a PODxt to a GNX3 to a Boss GT-Pro through E-Bay. If you get a regular Prophesy you can download the Prophesy II patches - I would get the expression pedal and midi channel switcher too.

I've been using their Utopia about 3/4 of my gigs. When I want the very best sound I use my stompboxes into my amp. But the Rocktron is just so easy that on a lot of gigs I just throw it on the floor and I'm ready. Since it sounds so good and is so cheap, I have to think their Prophesy is killer.
 
I've owned a J Station for a few years now. The possibilities are unlimited with this thing. If you have a MIDI port on your computer you can plug it into the J Station and edit the effects, eq, speaker cabinets, amp heads, copmbos etc, via the J Edit Software. You can download it off the Johnson website for free.

I use it as a direct unit ( analog and digital outputs) and through my Peavey valveking combo amp. I don't have anything bad to say about it. Check e-bay, there are usually a few on there.
 
Boss ME-5

Another vote for the BOSS multi-effects here. I have owned the BOSS ME-5 for around 20 years now and it has served me very well indeed. I replaced the switch on one of the pedals about 5 years ago but apart from that it has never let me down.
This is made with a steel chassis, a very robust unit!

Of all of the other options I would go with BOSS but having owned a GT-Pro I can tell you that it comes nowhere close to the Prophesy for realism - still a great product though). All comes down to your own taste - the really good thing about the Prophesy is the speaker simulator. It's the only unit that I've played through headphones that 'feels' like playing through an amp (IMO!). Check out the link anyway. As I said, if the Prophesy is not for you BOSS is the next best thing.

I actually had two of them for a while, I bought my dads one off him a few years ago and then he bought it back again.
Like I said earlier, they are a very robust unit and I have a roadcase that mine sits in alongside my Wah Wah pedal. I just take the lid off the roadcase and sit it on the stage/floor etc.
 
I have a DigiTech RP350 and it is one of the purchases I have come to regret. Next time I purchase I will definitely be looking at the Boss line.

i record in studios all the time a small line 6 pod is the best thing i ever invested in i use no amps just the pod you can create just about any sound you wont . on the other hand i also have a small vox valtronex amp when you plug strait in the back it cuts the speaker off it is great for doing some awlsome guitar solos and has very difrent feel from the pod we plug the both of them strait into the bord

yeah, I had a RP something too...and i didn't like it, never got around to the custom setups, but with 300 or so presets, I pretty much heard what it did and it was missing something in the tone department.

it sat with dust for a few years, I bought a POD Bean like everyone recommended and it's great.
my son is starting playing so soon after the Rp finally got some use it stopped working?!

I've had others that I would recommend the SansAmp was nice, the Line 6 Bean POD I have had and is really a great DI, the other RP6 I gave my brother walwart went out and it was "thin" sounding too..imo.

.... I liked the Boss pedals, always seemed to have a nice tone form the few I used and their built better it seems, imo.

The resale on these pedal things are tough already, when the RP which had less than 1000 hrs on it went out, I sold it for $15...I can't afford crap like that. Strange, looking around.. most the stuff I like the sound of has lasted over 10-15yrs?

So again, I think you can do better for the same money.
 
I've got a Boss GT-8 here that I'm borrowing and I'm gonna make a video demo of it when I can. I haven't used it with an amp yet, but so far with headphones, I really don't like any of the distortion/fuzz/overdrive sounds, but the other effects seem to work ok. I read about the preset patches being really bad, and man they are - you really have to build your own patches to get anywhere.

Yeah the Utopia has kinda caught my eye. It almost seems too cheap given the good reps it's had, but I think I'll give it a go.

Just so you know ..... the access to presets via footswitch is kinda clumsy.
I've gotten used to it and put up with it because the sound is so nice. I have a POD, J-Station, V-Amp2, Digitech 350 and several rackmount Digitechs. The only one that sounds close enough to the real thing for me is the Rocktron.
But in live situations ..... you can't see the readout if it's outside ...... and the only way to access any effects is to have them set up in a preset. Yoiu can make an effect controlable with the foot pedal but that's it.
And the small footswitches are hard to know if you've pushed it or not.
So for live work .... you really have to get used to it and you will curse it once or twice.
For recording none of this would matter of course.
and I have managed to get comfortable with it but I wanted to warn you about that.

Whatever works for you is a good piece of gear. I truly believe that a piece of equipment can be crap for one guy and be the best thing going for someone else.

something i've run into is similar to that.
the boss distortions and whatnot don't sound right, but the other effects are great. And on the other hand, on Line 6 gear, the effects suck but the amp modeling (distortion and such) is pretty decent. Me and my friends therefore usually end up playing/tracking with that combination of Boss effects and Line 6 modeling.

bad habit probably tho.. hehe
